Every once in a while I have a dream that I'm a kid and I rented an SNES and Starfox from Blockbuster, but the late fees are just adding up...I am in my childhood bedroom and my stereo has a five disk changer and it can play cassettes. They are all Sublime and Pearl Jam. Then I wake up in a cold sweat and make sure all my bills are paid.

They were the same commercial rental copies you’d get anywhere else.

blockbuster's purpose was to sell you the feeling of temporary ascension above entertainment scarcity nobody could afford to own a copy of every movie and game they could possibly want, but blockbuster could, and a rental was your pick of the infinite for $2.99. shall you take home An Affair to Remember, or Beastmaster 2? 🤔 it's up to you, you capricious god of entertainment commodities we don't live in that world anymore. the dragon is slain. the contents of the entire store and beyond is free at each of our fingertips now, the infinite unfiltered, inescapable, and we float untethered through its abyss. blockbuster has no meaning, no context in a place like this when people miss blockbuster, what they miss is lacking. the contrast between the feeling of having and not having. how can you learn to appreciate what you have when what you have is more than you could possibly need in a thousand lifetimes? to yearn for blockbuster is to yearn for mooring. we're each of us buried under a stultifying morass of entertainment possibilities

BAGS FLY AT NOON posted:I rented a lot of movies from Blockbuster and I don’t remember any of this being true. They were the same commercial rental copies you’d get anywhere else. Yeah, this was the rumor for years, but I never noticed it myself in any major way, but there were a few exceptions. Mostly it came down to the following, from what I understood: Blockbuster was one of the few national chains for quite a while, and unlike your local mom and pop video store, they never had porn tapes. When the XXX officially got a MPAA-sanctioned NC-17, they promoted the fact that they weren't going to carry those, either. Pretty much the same G-R rated film you'd find at any other video store was available at Blockbuster. They didn't edit their own copies of a film or anything. HOWEVER, loopholes and exceptions. They did have (perhaps specifically made for them) 'family friendly' cuts of some films. Specifically I remember a copy of Josie and the Pussycats on their shelves that was a non-PG13 or non-PG version that must have cut some of the material to make it more all ages. They also had the R-rated cut of the Pirates porn flick that was pretty big about 15 years ago I seem to remember on their shelves, too. (Might have been a 'sale' copy, though.) Finally, while they didn't carry any NC-17 content, the best loophole was they had a ton of stuff that was simply 'unrated'. I found a lot of movies that had that rating on it on their shelves, especially foreign films and anime. As the DVD era got underway, the video releases of PG-13/R rated Theatrical cuts and R-rated/Unrated versions was pretty common. Blockbuster might have simply opted to carry only the R-rated versions if both were available. I seem to further remember pretty much all their Unrated/R-rated tapes had an extra warning sticker on the boxes that it wasn't appropriate for minors, at least in my region.

My local video store was called Video Warehouse and I used to rent wrestling pay-per-views on VHS when I was a kid and spending weekends with my grandmother. They had a porn section behind a closed door that you had to get an employee to let you into..always wanted to sneak back there but never got the opportunity

I don't think the company was editing the movies or anything. More like, they simply didn't carry NC-17 or "controversial" titles. Though streaming platforms also curate their content so idk if it's that different from today.
