I've preordered too, it looks awesome. Any game where I can invade someone else's and try to make them sad is a game that can have some of my money.

My friend pushed this hard on me and he basically just said that it's Diablo meets Helldivers meets Dead Nation which was an immediate buy for me. Really pumped to play this tomorrow.

some pro tips i gleaned from watching streams

1. characters move slower when back peddling to shoot so it might be better to run and then turn to fire when you have distance

2. check your fire around spawn points. they are explosive and destructible

3. tank primary weapon range is short so he might work better as a support class than a lone wolf. he needs to draw aggro from a whole swarm of enemies to be in range to hit any of them without switching to special or heavy gun. Saboteur might be the strongest solo class because of the long range, high rate of fire, and ricochet effect on his primary weapon but i think whoever you choose its going to be hard without a combination of healing from the biospecialist, shields from the tank, and air strikes from the sab.

Does it appear that soloing this will be as bad as Dead Nation? I tried playing that again last night and it is just a miserable experience solo.

reviews say that its totally possible but not as fun as coop. everything seems to be level scaled for the mix of characters on the mission so solo you'd just get easier bugs most likely.

that's good to know after playing Helldivers solo to the point where it's outright impossible on some planets. Though the hilarity mainly comes from 4 people killing themselves. Is there friendly fire in this game?

Played up to character level 7 with some of you. Game is good. Super pretty, controls tight. We played on veteran and definitely wiped a few times, which isn't super punishing but makes you want to be better. Active reload feels super important, so I need to get used to that.

What may surprise or put off some people is that each class is locked into one primary weapon type, while all can access all secondary and heavies through drops. So, in addition to skills the primary defines/balances a class. I like the SMG on the Saboteur, nice range and it spins up so it can really mow down a horde but also eat the clip quickly. Tomorrow I am probably going to try both the other classes to compare.

I like the loot system for the size/price of a game this is. The options aren't endless for your grinding pleasure like Diablo 3. You are looking for a primary, secondary, heavy and throwable equipment you like and they drop at a reasonable rate. On top of that there are cores you can slot into them for buffs (which I think you get back when you are done with that weapon) and materials to gamble/reroll individual stats on weapons if you do want to be the type to min/max.

Real hurthling!
Sep 11, 2001

Ya if you scrap a weapon you get the cores back. They can be upgraded too for every 3 of a kind.

Scrapping also gets you metal which can be used to reroll stats.
Every weapon has a range for each of its stats that the reroll can fall in and it costs metal to try and improve the numbers within that range.

Its all pretty simple but makes me want to play more to try and roll more clip capacity on my shot gun.

Does no one read the tips on the loading screen? Here's one..

If you kill a rez-thing before activating it, you get an additional chest drop at the end of the mission, stacking up to 3. You lose all stacks if you die.

Also, when the helicopter comes, remember to open up the chests. I didn't realise that chests dropped on my first dude :downs:

I believe that is individual. You notice the voice saying XP boost lost or whatever when you die, I believe the drops boost applies as well there.

In the bottom right there is a bar displaying icons for your current buffs, I believe you get a treasure chest icon after destroying a respawn point.

Hardcore games ending when the squad leader dies. :stare:

Was playing with some dude who knew a bunch of areas of the game with chests and flowers, and I get the craziest goddamn weapon, purples up my wazoo. My SMG pretty much oneshotted everything.

Couldn't reproduce it though, but Hardcore with a full team is definitely where the fun is at. Sucks that there are incredibly few public games. Not just on Hardcore, but just Veteran games in general. Weird.

The Tank unit is terrible to play. Way too immobile.

Real hurthling!
Sep 11, 2001

Yeah hardcore is pretty neat.
Tank gets more useful if you put all points in athlete and shield so you can move faster and get close enough to hit anything

He really seems like a buddy class more than a solo though

ufarn
May 30, 2009
Shield seems like the best group ability in the game by far, and all the upgrades seem worth it. The Medic's Heal upgrades look borderline useless for the most part.

As long as someone else wants to play the dude who's the first who'll die in a Hardcore game, I'm down, but he's living on borrowed time. He also seems to stagger when hit so he can't dodge out of trouble.

Games really fun. Got to level 11 as a tank, mostly starting solo games and people join in. I got 2 legendaries on the same mission, unfortunately both are heavy. Flamethrower and a missile launcher, both are level 8. Haven't used the launcher, but my flamethrower upgraded is like 2500 DPS and the gear score (what is that?) Is like 3200. It wrecks everything, champion events included. I joined 4 player vet game and it was still destroying everything :black101:

Real hurthling!

i haven't figured it out either. it might have something to do with scaling the enemies, like higher gear score = able to deal with tougher mobs idk.

TBD

I know the Medic's heal scales based on gear score, so that probably applies to other abilities.

They begin again

Still trying to decide if this is for me. I'll be playing it 100% solo, should I be able to generally do and see everything? I don't mind grinding if that's a thing.

What is the actual mission/level/map progression like? Is there a hub? Randomly generated levels? I haven't been able to tell from the few gameplay videos I've watched.

What is the game's "carrot"? In D3 I can play forever simply because the gameplay is so satisfying and there's always new gear around the corner.

I've been playing mostly solo, but online is more fun, even with randoms. You should be able to see everything. I just finished the story missions and the last one was hard, I had to do it with 3 other people. Beating the story missions starts the campaign over with some new stuff to do.

Max level is 30. Leveling up gets ability points for passives and active abilities. You can change the points around at will.

I don't know if it's randomly generated levels, I think it is but I'm not sure. It's kinda like destiny, in that there's areas you choose and with missions in that area you choose. For example, the first area is Barrow, AK (it's actually Bethel, they put the wrong name or wrong location because Barrow is in Northern AK) and all the missions in Barrow have the same map but different starting spots and objectives. I liked it.

I don't know about playing forever, I don't think I'm far enough to say yet. Getting new loot is awesome though. I got a legendary primary and went from 1300dps to 14600 DPS. It is awesome.

Imagine how much more sad and lonely we would be if not for the hard work of lowtax. Here's $12.95 to his aid.
I enjoyed the fear factor of playing Dead Nation solo, but I swear the hardest difficulty was easier in the PS3 version than the PS4 one. Got this baby bought, gonna hit the store then see if it's my jam soloing or if I wanna call in some friendly drop pods.

Has anyone played around with rerolling? Does the item keep the item level, or? I imagine it's an important mechanic, but I have to spend materials to figure out what exactly it does, since there aren't a whole lot of tooltips.

In the re-rolling menu you've got bar graphs indicating the outliers of what your stats could be with the middle number being what it currently is at. Note that for most items you don't have that much play with it, but clip size for shotguns or crit chance may be what to go for instead of wasting mats on getting few more damage HP.

Game is pretty fun, a lot less depth than I was expecting but it's pretty fun on Veteran with friends. Not nearly as chaotic as Helldivers or as loot driven as Diablo but still a fun game to play with and sort of shut your brain off to. It is absolutely loving gorgeous though.

I'm a bit worried that there are no public Hardcore games 1/3-1/2 through the game (ish), because it's not really possible to do it solo on Veteran at that point.
