They only wanted fat girls because they were rich or from rich families. Land one of those, and no more sweating your rear end off every single day just to eat a bit. That, and one or two artists that were fetishists.

Attractiveness is all about perspective so I'd say either presently or recently is when things have been their worst. Sure if you took a guy or a girl from the past and compared them to today's beauty standards even mediocre people today would probably be pretty hot by comparison but you gotta keep in mind that today's hot people did not exist back then and from their perspective the prospects they had access to were decent. Today when digitally enhanced hot people are a click away while your average person is getting fatter and fatter means the majority of people are pursuing idolized standards that they themselves do not measure up to and will never be able to realistically obtain. Everyone is acutely aware that the people they're dating don't hold a candle to a-list airbrushed celebrities and everyone is more miserable for this knowledge whether or not they're willing to admit some part of them deep down is settling for a standard lower than they'd really prefer.

I sort of want to say the 70s had the most unattractive era of musical performers in the last probably 75 years or so. Would any of the top artists of the 1970s have made it in the post-MTV era of the 80s-onward?

The super toned arobics chick's from the 80s were always hot, even with the goofy looking workout clothes. Also the chick that does that 99 luft balloons song is like my ideal 80s babe. 60s and the 70s were terrible. Look up any picture, so loving terrible. All dudes had the same bowl haircut with the creepy step dad facial hair combo.

That could be said for pre-70's too just that the 70's had better visual documentation of this. that's sorta what my post was getting at though, from then, now and forever more we will keep getting higher visual standards of our celebrities and because it's so involved in our day to day life this will shift our standards we compare each other against. Sure no one expects their SO to look like a blockbuster film actor/actress, but everyone secretly wants it.

Debbie Harry was hot. A decade before people thought Cher was hot. A decade later, ppl thought Madonna was hot. Perhaps attractiveness alternates. Maybe some cavepeople were goodlooking, too. Their children, however were scabrous little pygmies who would in turn give birth to Aryan Supermen. And so forth.

I often look at pop stars from the 70s and think how much different they'd look today if they were young up-and-comers. Even people with "good bones" like Cher, Stevie Nicks, Don Henley or Jimi Hendrix would be considered hideous lizard people by today's cartoonish, super-groomed standards. David Gilmour, Grace Jones and maybe Bowie could make it today on their good looks. All of the young, virile, crazed Stones, tho? They'd be shoved to the back because the guys from Dawes look cleaner and smoother. Uncle Salty fucked around with this message at 15:31 on May 18, 2016 |

I'm going to say 1920's 'flapper girl' nonsense since people won't stop trying to revive it, and it never looked good. This kind of weird betty boop poo poo with flattened out hair. I can only imagine how they smelled. Maybe it was a good era in which to party but so were the late 70's An honorable 2nd place to the late 80's/early 90's revival high-waisted mom jeans fashion that is in style now. Some women are (barely) pulling it off due to youth, but it's going to be a loving disaster when they hit 30.

I call bullshit on this one: the 70s really did just have some exceptionally terrible tastes and trends when it came to what was considered attractive. It'll be misleading if you focus on musicians as pre-MTV there was nowhere near as much emphasis on a musical act's visual image, but even then the 50s and 60s could had the likes of Elvis and Nancy Sinatra (the latter was held up mostly by lots of sexy makeup and mini skirts, etc., but hey when dolled up she was a bombshell). I mean, 50s teen idols looked like Ricky Nelson: And 70s teen idols looked like David Cassidy: Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh...
