I don't get the hate for this song. I always interpreted it as being bitterly sarcastic. I find it to be a darkly humorous song with a perfectly faux-saccharine undertone and a sickly-sweet melody that's catchy in spite of itself.

Also, it has Kate Pierson from The B-52s.

I would say that the most obvious guilty pleasure for a lot of people is going to be Madonna (or maybe Michael Jackson) because what could be more vapid and catchy than 80s pop?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iyrBMdWPiY

For me, Madonna is also emblematic of a time before I really had any sophistication for music, and it was just part of the vague background of the world. As a preteen in the late 80s, I heard music like Madonna played by my older sister, and it kind of reminds me of an innocent time when pop music like that was the gateway to the exciting world of being a teenager. By the time I got to be a teenager myself, I was so serious about everything, and it took me a while to admit to liking stuff like this.

some of the stuff being posted is pretty safe.

every terrible song has a statute of limitations. depending on the song and how critically panned it was and how ubiquitous and annoying it was it can be 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, etc. eventually it will become socially acceptable to admit to like it again and nobody will care.

anyway...

This thread isn't about whether or not a song is terrible, it's about guilt in liking a song in the face of elitist music lovers. Most elitist music lovers (like me) will dismiss Wham! as crap (Wake me up before you GoGo? :barf:) but this is their one triumph-- beautifully crafted, well-produced, lush, textured, melodically complex (but admittedly lyrically kinda stupid) masterpiece:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9abYzI9ycjk
As much as I've poo poo on this band over the years, I feel really guilty about loving this song.

Not at all! Elitist music lovers (like me) love Gabriel, and that's a great track. No guilt there. Phil Collins, on the other hand...
