Also watch horror movies with buddies or in a full theater for maximum fun. There are some legit good horror movies to watch solo, but most of them are meant to be popcorn flicks where you get creeped out, jump at the jump scares, and then laugh together about it afterwards.

I'm a big fan of The Conjuring. The second one is good too, but not as good as the first, I think. Avoid Annabelle. That movie has a couple good moments, but is otherwise a train wreck. It Follows is really great, one of the standouts of the last several years. If you wanna check out some much older horror, here are a few of my favourites. The Last Man on Earth (Vincent Price): if you've seen I am Legend with Will Smith, this is based on the same story, but much better, IMO. Horror Hotel / City of the Dead: A young woman travels to a mysterious New England town to investigate it's history of witchcraft. Her brother and boyfriend go searching for her when she doesn't return and end up running into a real cult of witches. It's got Christopher Lee and some great, spooky atmosphere. Night of the Living Dead: This is the movie that spawned the creation of the MPAA. Dawn and Day are great too, but I haven't been a fan of the later Romero films. Bride of Frankenstein: Yes, it is one of the sequels that surpasses the original. The House on Haunted Hill: Another great Vincent Price flick. It's great fun to watch on a stormy night. When it was originally in the theatres, some theatres were set up to have skeletons swoop over the audiences at certain parts to highlight the scares. These films aren't really "scary" by modern standards, but I still really enjoy them. I also saw Train to Busan on Netflix earlier this year and have nothing but great things to say about it. I usually don't cry when watching zombie movies, but I was definitely tearing up in some parts.

Pandorum is a personal favorite for me. It's a bit similar to Alien and has a few too many action scenes, but the premise is neat. More of a sci-fi horror with an existential bent though. Dagon is just great if you're into Lovecraft, but it gets extremely cheesy and almost comedic in some scenes. Wouldn't recommend it as a straight up horror movie though. Also, definitely Descent. Watch the British version, too. The sequel is kinda meh and more of the same tho. There were like 3 different cave horror movies that year (2005?2006?) and if you have a niche interest in that, watch 'em all. Descent is the best of the three tho.

Vastarien posted:The first three Silent Hill games are absolute perfection. The series takes a draaaastic nosedive afterwards. So, yeah, stick to the first three. And stay away from the HD collection. That thing was a loving mess. Close, it takes a nosedive after 4. This is an unpopular opinion, and I swear I'm not trying to be Mr. Contrarian Goonlord here, but I would actually argue that 4 is the most unsettling and scary of the originals before the series got farmed out. Silent Hill dorks are stubborn and poo poo on the game because it didn't have the same flashlight or radio gameplay, but it deserves to be given a chance.

You guys have given me a lot to consider! It's like I can't really contribute to my own thread without mentioning what I already know and what everyone else probably does. I'm going to a game con this weekend and we'll have to keep an eye open for Silent Hill. Worse comes to worst though I suppose it could just be emulated. Still need to make myself play System Shock 2, it's supposed to be great. The movies are gonna take me some time to go through though, and I should probably watch Scream. It's one of her favorites. Let me break down some things that do and don't appeal to me about the genre, particularly in a film context, and it's really only because I'm a sensitive baby and have a hard time watching certain kinds of scenes. I may have repeated one or two of these things from the OP but here we go: Things that are appealing to me include- Cartoon violence Campy, painfully silly plot lines, character decisions (of course you would go into that room, why wouldn't you?) Satanic/Intense horror imagery (sorta like Castlevania) And speaking to that, the general over-the-top aesthetic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBxP8AExRfs Holy crap I love this creepily cheesy and old rear end synth An air of terror or the feeling that something is going to happen. Things I don't like so much- Characters being built up and killed (I feel like it's easier for me to get on Freddy's side if I don't care about the people he's killing) Intensely negative sexual contexts (Rape, basically. and most things relating to it) Gritty pain and suffering It's really important to me to separate the violence from the humanity or else I feel like I'm just watching a drama. That's all well and good too, but I feel like in a drama there should be more of a balance in power between protagonists and antagonists and horror is meant to tip that scale in the favor of the villain. So thusly it's unfair to me to see good people get killed when they were probably destined to from the start of the movie. Jigglesby posted:The Void is good. It has a lot of the same type of stuff as early Hellraiser movies, but not a thousand years old. the first Hellraiser is probably one of the only horror movies I've seen to completion (so far!) and the second one was some cheesy on-demand thing called Night of the Demons. Teenagers have sex, teenagers get killed, nerdy girl survives. Standard procedure.

Horror should be something you watch with no way to control it or go through an inventory menu, imo. Honestly I only did that because the OP mentioned games and I didn't actually read most of the post. Horror games can be a lot of fun but yeah movies in general are the better way to experience it. I'll second The Descent, it's very good for what it is especially if you get spooked easily by claustrophobic stuff. The sequel is pretty poo poo so I'd avoid that, but it does have one funny scene that made me not regret watching it once.

I like both horror movies and horror games, and for different reasons! I'd like to second Soul Reaver's recommendation of The Innocents (1961). It has the only scene that can give me goosebumps on repeat viewings. (Anna...?) I recommend the 1989 BBC version of The Woman in Black over the 2012 one, myself. It's slower, more understated and much closer to the book. I can think of one jump scare in the whole thing, if you can even call it that. It jumps out at you, but then it mercilessly bears down. What do you call that? I watched The Haunting (1963) again for the millionth time the other night and enjoy it just as much as ever. This is very, very close to the Shirley Jackson novel, lifting whole excerpts of dialogue and monologues. Which is great, because hers is a marvelous writing style and I can likewise recommend the book! Like the two above, this is a ghost story that hinges on the increasing instability of its protagonist. The VVitch is a recent movie that's expertly crafted. The writer/(first time!) director went to great lengths to capture period accurate clothing, housing, dialogue and even used almost entirely natural lighting. There's even an exorcism scene lifted directly from a historical account of a Puritan exorcism. You don't have to give it the same leniency you usually do horror films because it's just a very, very well-made film by itself. So I've recommended a bunch of slow burn, psychological horror movies thus far. Now let me change it up and offer a film YOU. WILL. LOVE. I've never met someone who didn't love this movie. It's so goddamn fun, it has great creature effects, it's a surprisingly well thought out script, has some great horror, some great comedy and a song called Surfin' Dead. Also the first instance of running zombies. LET NO ONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE. And a hot punk chick does a naked graveyard dance, so there's that!

WMain00 posted:Seconding this. Also after watching the first descent you can go to the second one and watch them make an absolute trainwreck of a movie. Nthing The Descent. This is just a good movie, and then it's a scary movie on top of that. The VVitch is really gorgeous if you have a bit of historical context, can handle accents/language shifts, and like character development. I can see how it might be a bit of a bore if you don't have all those things but personally I loved it. SILENT HILL 2. This is widely considered to be one of the best horror games out there, and for goddamn good reasons. If Satanism or other religious aspects float your boat you'll probably like 1 and 3 as well, but 2 abandons the religious framework for a deep delve into character and psychology instead and it works very, very well. When I think of horror, Silent Hill 2 is my go-to game. One of the very few games I wish I could play again for the first time. Hey OP, are you planning to come back and update us on the things you watch/play? I love seeing people's reactions.

I'd also recommend 1408. By far the best movie adaptation of a Stephen King story (imho) and is really good even though it's pretty much just John Cusack in a hotel room. There are a few different endings and I don't think any of them are particularly satisfying, but I still liked it a lot. 28 days later is also a classic one everyone should watch if you haven't seen it yet. The sequel is actually pretty good too (but still a step down in quality) which is very rare for a horror movie.
