Be apolitical, spend your time studying and being good in class while networking and interning to get a good job, and when you've graduated and are actually making your own money and are en route to paying down your student debt, then get political.

I don't know how much is satire here, but I know a pretty intelligent, quiet, perceptive and sensitive physicist woman who's 27 and an anarchist and she seems pretty organized so... I mean at the foundation of that political philosophy is basically just faith in human nature as far as I can tell.

Humans naturally will form societies. They will naturally want to develop the complexity of those societies. Anarchy can only last so for so long because people will want to form organized societies because having social organization allows for more complex economic activity to happen and therefor making their lives better. Basically anarchism is really dumb and actually highly unnatural.

I'm not surprised that a physicist would think you can build a well-functioning human society from first principles. I know I used to think that for a long while. Might have even believed it when I was 27.

Absurd Alhazred posted:Talk about damning with faint praise. What's their competition, tankies and Larouchites? I dunno I'm too much of a formal rules person, and I think anarchists underestimate the dangers of informal power; and that in a lot of oppressive states and such, power is often enforced under-the-table and not "officially." Like in an anarchist punk house there's always some dude who is really in charge and the one rule is you can't cross him or even acknowledge he's really calling the shots. Become a monarchist Only a true king can provide for his people, as decreed by God. Instead of dressing up as a desk jockey or a riff-raff with 500$ leather jacket, you can have a spiffy suit of armor.

DoctorStrangelove posted:Basically anarchism is really dumb and actually highly unnatural. One could argue the same for the city-states that required chattel slavery and large-scale warfare that came about after the stone age. In our weird modern world, both idealism and nihilism are treated with scorn. The alternative is a kind of pragmatism that says "take what you can" and that doesn't really gel with the stories (real and fictitious) that our societies are based on. Guess what I'm saying is that if there was some kind of obvious way out, we'd have found it. We've trapped ourselves imo and we're just going to have to keep moving and see what happens (and the dark ages didn't really end so much as they got slightly brighter).
