Boris Bolshevik - 10 October 1941

Looks like we're all pulling double-duty today

Once again, fighter cover has been assigned to us. While we didn't appear to have many issues last time, we did get jumped en-route. Hopefully that won't be a common occurrence.

Our target is some 30-40 kilometers behind the frontline. Destroying this should help our men on the ground today.

As a note, I've changed a difficulty setting so that I am always starting on the runway.

From the War Diary of Boris Bolshevik - 62nd ShAP: posted:

I sleep a little easier tonight, knowing I can handle myself in the air, although I haven't forgotten the incident regarding my bomb drop mechanism. The squadron gathers in the briefing room after breakfast and we are given our orders for the day. We are being sent on two missions to strike units and supplies being

08:35
We begin to take-off and, a few minutes later, we have formed up and begin to make our way to the front.

08:50
5 Fighters announce their presence above and in front of us, lets hope this goes well. The flight to the front is otherwise uninteresting.

09:07
The escorts sound off that they have begun their attack on some enemy planes. This, just moments before a lone 109 swoops in from the left, pulling up behind Anatoliy and...

https://i.imgur.com/jGR7GtG.mp4

His wing was just gone. I still believe I must have missed something; I saw the explosion, and suddenly his plane is corkscrewing downwards, left wing missing at the root. I wanted to get revenge immediately, but I also knew that I could not accomplish that goal against the fighters. They were simply too fast and too maneuverable while I was weighed down with my rockets and bombs.

I pulled into a wide downward spiral to port, circling around in search of targets when I spotted a member of my flight, I forget who, launching rockets against a target. I raced towards them, hoping to enact my revenge. The target column was spotted halfway out of a local forest, and we began to rain down steel and death on them.

https://i.imgur.com/VODSNru.gifv

09:09
After expending my munitions, I made my way out of the target area, taking some return fire in the process by the now-angry ground forces.

I had tried to insert myself into several fights, but was simply could not achieve anything with my machine. So I began to fly in a north-easterly direction. Things were going well until I heard the sound of metal hitting metal, and I began evasive maneuvers. Pulling a tight starboard turn, the enemy soon came in my sight, a lone Bf-109. Maybe he was confident that an Il-2 could not out-turn him, maybe I was more aggressive in my turn, but in any case he was set to fly right in front of me...

https://i.imgur.com/VJdZT2F.gifv

Black smoke began to trail out behind him and I took the opportunity to press the attack. Not having shot my guns at the enemy column, I had a full complement to expend against this foe. I will admit, my marksmanship needs work, but eventually...

https://i.imgur.com/nC3U3g8.gifv

09:44
Finally back at base, I had to abort one landing attempt because I came in too fast. I pulled around and landed, but spun around when my tailwheel caught something. Luckily, an Il-2's wings are not fragile, and any bumps I incurred were minor. Afterwards, it was a simple taxi back to the hangar and awaiting the arrival of my comrades before debriefing.

My claims for 1 aircraft: 1 Bf-109. Three vehicles was attributed to me as well.

I'm 1000 rubles richer, but the loss of men in the squad does not help raise my spirit.

We would only learn that both Felix Fokin and Zinoviy Avdeev were taken prisoner days after this action. Anatoliy Ryabov either died immediately, or failed to jump out of his plane as it tumbled in the air.

Hopefully we will get reinforcements soon...

:rip: = Dead
# = Captured
+ = Injured

It seems flight hours won't matter much, even with our sturdy aircraft, of which we only have 6 still operational.

And now to plan for the afternoon mission...

Did Soviet aces wear anything unique as part of their pilot culture? I've read that American aces would sometimes sew a red silk lining into their flight jacket.

I've been on an A-2 jacket reading binge after buying a Schott replica from the 60s or 70s to complement my 1980s Tiger Fox replica (so now I have black and brown options for the winter). I really, really want one of the Eastman Leather stitch-perfect replicas but even the cheapest are over $1000 after shipping to the United States.

Also fun fact: the A-2 was specifically designed without side pockets like Pokryshkin has to keep soldiers from looking sloppy by standing around with their hands in their pockets.

"From the War Diary of Boris Bolshevik - 62nd ShAP posted:

October 10th, 1941

14:30
Barely any time to rest and relax before we're on the grass strip again, preparing to take to the skies. I wonder what our flight of three planes could do. At least we are still flying over friendly territory, for the most part.

15:15
Still no contact with our escorts. Did they miss us? I could have sworn I saw Aristarkh fire several flares to announce our allegiance.

15:19
We're some 25 kilometers away from the rendezvous point, and that much closer to the front line. This does not bode well, and I have an uneasy feeling in my gut. I want to ask Aristarkh to abort the mission, but I do not want to admit to any cowardice, lest I suffer the consequences.

15:20
The flight adopts a line astern formation as we approach the battle lines. #1 banks right, and I quickly observe my map to see why, we're at least 10 kilometers away from our next waypoint.

NO! Not again! We're not even across the line and the Huns have pounced on our flight, and where is that damned escort flight!

Nose down, bank left. Maybe if I'm lucky I can catch a 109 with its pants down and, at the very least, damage it, sending it home. I straighten out, spotting a potential victim heading straight towards me. Good! I know I have more armour then him, maybe this chicken will get cooked. He pulls to his left, and I pull hard on my stick to get a good deflection shot.

Before I have a moment to think about a potential kill, the sky lights up around me, cannon rounds exploding against the metal skin of my machine, tracer rounds showing me just how dire my situation is.

Aristarkh, Edouard, I hope you can forgive me. I didn't think we would survive this and, lacking any fighter escort and being ambushed by 4 fighters just to die somewhere southwest of Moscow. I dropped my bombs and launched all my rockets, watching the latter fly off into one of the many forests dotting the land. I opened the throttle and hugged the ground when and where I could. Despite all my attempts to evade those following me, I would receive brief notifications that they, annoyingly, were still in hot pursuit.

Every time the sound of machine gun and cannon fire would end, I frantically search all around. The German pilots were getting cocky and leaving themselves open to retaliation, but any attempts on my part to do so were quickly cut off by the next kraut in line looking to increase his score.

15:22
What feels like ages is but mere minutes, and I hear another set of rounds strike my injured ship. Every round serving only to increase my paranoia. "Will my wing rip off now, or in the next turn I make?" "How many more hits before I find myself a bleeding corpse?" I had to force myself to think of something else. Another pass, and another new set of holes are punched into the thick steel frame I sat in. Somewhere in the distance, I heard the sound of crunching and... an explosion? For some reason I thought someone was helping me out, but a glance backwards simply revealed a 109 staring back at me.

A river presented itself in front of me, and yet again I hugged the ground as best I could, or the water in this case. More sounds of gunfire followed, and I could see their effects as water rose where they struck, splashing my windshield. I scrambled to shake the pest on my tail, pulling and pushing the yoke to kill airspeed in a vain attempt to force him to overshoot, or ram into me. Well... if the crash didn't kill me, I'd probably drown before I could pull myself out.

https://i.imgur.com/uBB99ps.gifv

15:23
The time was 15:23, I will remember it always. At that moment, I had not only tricked some bastard into overshooting me, but one of my cannon rounds managed to find its mark and caused a brilliant explosion in front of me. Thus, I became an Ace. I let out a raucous laugh, staring in disbelief as the remaining lump of steel plummeted downwards. I could not gloat or survey the area it landed in, as I was not sure if anyone else was still behind me. Nose down, stay low, maybe I'll make it home.

15:37
Finally! My battered craft slowly descends until the wheels touch the soil, and I suddenly felt so elated; so happy to be alive.

The armourers tell me they found over 100 individual strikes on my plane. How the left wing managed to stay where it was was a testament to the design's durability.

Despite leaving them, a reconnaissance report later observed that the train station received enough damage to cause a stoppage in operations.

I never saw Aristarkh Yakovlev or Edouard Anisimov again. I am told that Edouard died by enemy ground fire over the target area. The man who claims this also claimed to have been in the same prisoner camp as Aristarkh but he... well, let's just say he is flying with a different set of wings now.

The nights are already depressing, and I shudder to think of what the new recruits will say when they learn of the unit's history.

I can't check right now, but if it was carrying wing guns, its possible it set off the ammo in the wing. If it was a bog-standard F-variant, then maybe the HE round exploded outside the wing, giving off the large visual, but only ripping off the wing and rudder/tail as a result.

Watching the video in slow motion, it looks like the left wing blows completely in half but the explosion is centered on the plane.

The fuel tank is right behind and underneath the pilot, which means a direct hit in the center of the fuselage from the underside should detonate the fuel. The game may have hosed up and blown the wing off from a fuel tank hit instead of blasting the plane to pieces like it should have been.

In terms of variants, that shouldn't matter. It looks like all Bf 109s had this fuel tank configuration and just added armor as time went on.

I'd spotted some comments that were saying that there were tanks in the middle of the wings, which didn't make sense considering where the guns are placed and what the internals are, so I figured I'd look it up just in case.

Personally, I'm sticking with the round exploding and just ripping the plane apart, as thats way more metal.

You wouldn't call a .50 cal a pea-shooter, which is the same size as the 12.7mm's the Russians used!

Now, granted, you still have some Russian planes that had 7.62mm guns but its at least on par with the German stuff. The biggest problem I usually have with Russian fighters is the lack of ammo.

Can you eventually upgrade to a later model IL-2 with a rear gunner?

Also, does the game model the effects of altitude? I just built a Mig-3 model in 1/72 scale and the instructions had an info blurb about that particular plane being meant for high altitudes and not being real good lower to the ground where most aerial battles on the eastern front took place.

Some of those planes do start looking pretty undergunned to the casual reader. Not the IL-2, of course, but when you consider that the Thunderbolt had 8 .50cals or later Hurricanes came with a quartet of 20mm Hisbano cannons, Soviet fighter craft only having a couple center line guns seems weak to the layperson.

Yes this game models altitude performance for each aircraft. If you're flying Russian planes with mutli-stage superchargers you'll have to change stages at certain altitudes along with changing mixture or suffer a performance penalty.
