Del Shannon is such a weird part of American pop. Like, I should hate his gimmicks, but his poo poo was such a big part of the oldies radio when I was a kid that I have a weird affinity for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSWMJxbxj7c

Why are these pop songs a billion times more catchy and better than the stuff on the radio today? These songs are way before my time, so there's no nostalgia factor at play.

Jose Oquendo posted:Why are these pop songs a billion times more catchy and better than the stuff on the radio today? There's no concise answer to that, but a big factor at play was simple desperation and hardship during the 20th century translating into over the top performances in situations where they had to get it in the first take. I'm with you though, all this stuff is before my time but I exhaust most of my effort hunting down music from 70-90 years ago because it's so full of feeling rather than numb cynicism.

Does it count if it's a song that was written in the 60s but all the old recordings kinda sucked but then in the 90's Pearl Jam recorded it and now it's basically a song that kinda tears your heart out every time you listen to it? Because if it does here's Last Kiss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0B-hJ_gotc

BeanpolePeckerwood posted:Del Shannon is such a weird part of American pop. Like, I should hate his gimmicks A lot of the slightly gimmicky or goofy stuff from that era plays well to my modern ears, like it wraps around into feeling like it has a modern sensibility with an intentional retro feel. If I didn't know the source and I heard Leader of the Pack came on amongst a bunch of indie and alternative stuff I might assume it was a modern act. Who Put the Bomp? is like that, especially at the very end with the spoken delivery of "And when I say, dip da dip da dip da dip You know I mean it from the bottom of my boogity boogity boogity shoop" feels like it is having fun with and recontextualizing that sort of scat vocals more than I would expect from a song made in the time where that stuff was popular.

I like the Bowie song used in Lost Highway but thought it would have been nicely congruent with Lynch’s other films if “Only The Lonely” (https://youtube.com/watch?v=aMShwAnph8k) or, better yet, “Running Scared” (https://youtube.com/watch?v=UH-AafkQPEo) had been used. extra stout posted:two pages without roy orbison? you loving idiots Disgraceful.
