Stick Insect posted:RSS lets me visit websites less often. Bad from an advertiser's point of view. Most of the articles in most site’s feeds were previews. Headline and first paragraph or so, with a link to the full article. It was enough to drive a lot of traffic for many sites (see earlier post where Buzzfeed said Reader was their top referrer).

hey this isn't exactly google + but I accidentally "signed in with google" on eBay, switched back to my main account, and about 10 minutes later I got an email that my (autogenerated google) account was suspended due to suspicious activity. is this just some weird backend fuckery or is my google account compromised
|
# ? Apr 8, 2019 12:04 |
|
I mean the ebay account was autogenerated based on my google accout name (something like silv-96) and now it's suspended. no strikes on the google account and I've changed pw in the last 6 months

the “suspicious activity” is that you’re not taking every opportunity to participate in the great ebay community!

# ? Apr 8, 2019 12:09 |

signing up for an ebay account and not doing anything with it is probably suspicious, yeah (maybe you're a fraudster creating a whole bunch of accounts to use later, so that someone looking at the regdate won't think the account is brand new. or you're creating a whole bunch of smurf accounts to sell to fraudsters.) legit signups have an actual reason for signing up, and presumably they're going to go bid on that listing or whatever.

really though i bet they love it when poo poo like that happens because they could use it as a bullshit performance metric “x number of signups this quarter! up uP UP!!!”

my assumption is that google products only live so long as someone important at google uses them as soon as there's nobody important around to force people to maintain an existing thing, everyone starts pushing to take it down so they can start working on new thing
