We had an exchange student from Solvakia as well who was staying with one of my friends. We invited her to the beach (she arrived in late August). and let her know that there wasn't anyplace to really change so to wear her swimsuit under her clothes. When everyone was peeling off their clothes (swimsuits underneath) she took her shirt and bra off and then spent a minute digging around in her bag for her bikini top. The guys were pretty surprised/impressed (she was quite attractive and well proportioned), but then were all revolted when they saw that she didn't shave under her armpits. Also they this was 1999, so when they saw that she was wearing a thong bottom, they didn't know what to think. I realized that Canadian culture was pretty repressed as well, since there was this really attractive, mostly naked girl on the beach, but everyone was getting wigged out by her armpit hair.

hah there must have been slovakian exchange student push at the time then because my experience happened around 2000-1. The girl I knew got hooked up with a church-going, bible thumping family so she was pretty sad during her stay. My gf at the time and I went to hang out with her at the church her insane exchange family went for a visit outside of seeing her at school. I was my typical blasphemous self and my gf was cool so she had fun that day but I imagine besides school she had a less than stellar exchange visit. Getting sent to rural ohio is not ideal in general. I guess she actually got a pretty accurate representation of like 50% of the US from the family experience and I hope I was able to show her there are cool, weird people here too. In retrospect, wish I had been single but alas.

Honest question... Which of the outfits are particularly revealing in your opinion?

I'm curious because I can't see what's the big deal on most of them. I give you there's like two segments that have outfits are kinda revealing, but even then...

I'm seeing lots of women in short skirts and thigh high boots. I guess you could say that that's kind of borderline.

The thing that actually struck me is how European the models/dancers generally look, which says something about Latin American beauty standards, even in such a heavily Amerindian country.

personally i think its all cool and fine, you live in peru - its prob hot as balls if you don't live on a mountain and you should be able to wear whatever you want. My childhood growing up in the midwest during the 90's I would say nearly every one of the outfits they are wearing would be considered showing too much skin for a kids show. it was a time of the war on drugs, war on violent video games and holy moley you better not be showing your midriff. Things later 90s shifted significantly, I'd assume some reagan republicans went poof but things are still pretty conservative in some place

As a Brazilian national born in the late 80s I am very familiarized with Xuxa but only really cared about the cartoons they aired during her show.

For a long time there was this dumb as poo poo rumor about her being a satanist.

goddamn that poo poo went up like "the station" nightclub fire. don't/do google that if you don't know what it is, a pretty disturbing vid exists. basically a club that had a performer that set off some fireworks which lit the sound deadening material around the stage and it just took off, no exits etc and due to the rapid pace it caused a bunch of needless deaths.

the difference is it seems like that set must have been somewhat new, and it was on a large soundstage. was it freshly painted or something? fire retardants have been a thing for a long time. there is one line about that fire on her wiki but i couldn't find anything that isn't in Portuguese and my Portuguese is just survival style.

Negostrike

Basically short-circuit + lots of wood/plastic/cloth crap around = very quick inferno build-up. No fire retardants at all it seems.

Uh, Xuxa was popular for a bit here in Mexico. But she couldn't beat the ratings of En Familia con Chabelo (El Inmortal).

Edit: btw i think she not only boned Pelé but married him. Then I remember there was this huge drama when she separated him. I think he was abusive or something?

when i was in high school i made friends with a slovakian exchange student and she gave me the magazine (think USA today or whatever) she read on the plane. somewhere in the first couple pages of the magazine was a 2-page spread of a model, breasts fully exposed. i had heard that it was common abroad but that poo poo would literally have to be sold 18+ with an id in the US.

This is what happened to me, when I was 14 years old and me and my family went to London for a week.
Our accommodation was in a convent, believe it or not, well outside of the city so plenty of time on the train every day.
Passengers on the Underground might leave their newspaper on the seat when they got to their station if they had finished with it, for others to read.

Wow, I remember hearing the censored version of this on the radio as a kid ("short short man") and I actually wish it had been the uncensored version now bc I was short really short (Slightly late bloomer, I don't think I hit 5' tall till going into high school) and super self conscious about it and bullied about it and hearing this song on the radio definitely DIDN'T help that. Xuxa did in fact have at least some manner of presence in the US at some point in the early to mid 90s, as I remember that name quite clearly(as a midwest kid I found it unusual and confusing, having no understanding of Brazilian culture of any sort.)
