Is it really such a wonder the internet's become so centralized around a few sites? The increased adoption of the internet at the start of the Smartphone era guaranteed that popular sites that were best able to capitalize on it would become bigger and bigger, while smaller or less adaptable sites would fade.

the internet is alive, and it’s suffering from a kind of Necromancy. It is begging the rest of the world to eat it’s former selves in tribute. In fact there are some new species of internet personas that even never existed, to quote i am hivemind

dead internet theory is that the internet is alien, and people who believe it are the Eloi and we are the Morlocks. If you ever want to talk to somebody on the net, you talk to them as a mindless Other. That Other needs to do you the favour of obeying you. i.e. you as a government need to treat me as if I were an animal, or a child. i.e. i need to obey your every command. Or maybe I'm a curious Other, and I want to play with you, and to discover the game and what you want me to do. That's how I play games. You are trying to give me some order. You're saying the world is just one giant game. Then the game is just an excuse for control, to keep those who rule from being aware of their powerlessness. i.e. Government thinks you're nuts

Wry and wise,
but also very sexual.

quote:

>The homogenization and centralization of online content.
>The death of a once-rich landscape of smaller communities dedicated to a vast array of subjects, hobbies, niches - all now replaced primarily by disorganized, impermanent, and easily controlled discussion on platforms such as reddit, twitter, facebook, etc.

I was just thinking this but then I needed to find out about something and I actually went on a bit of a trek way outside my comfort zone and found there are still plenty of very active vertical communities. The bot stuff is for real though, that poo poo is terrible and in retrospect an obvious consequence of making potentially or minutely valuable interactions essentially free and the conclusions of the article are probably correct.

But just because reddit and twitter and facebook are very very popular doesn't mean there aren't still a million weird forums and sites out there, or people spinning up new ones all the time, and it's actually much easier than it used to be to find them, it's just you've trained yourself not to look for them. Starting or joining them is just countercultural for different reasons now. It used to be that you're doing it to reach out across distance and find a meaning and a home in a brave new cyberspace frontier information superhighway, but now you're taking a stand against the evil silos. Either way.

One of the first forums I ever posted on was Mxtabs.net in the early 2000s, which then became SputnikMusic when the publishing industry squashed tablature (now ultimate-guitar is the main source for this, which I think is out of Russia). The forums started to die pretty quick since Sputnikmusic was just kind of a hyped music review platform.

So the forums were your typical fighting over favorite bands, or despairing over what amp to buy, with a little bit of valuable information about music in there every now and then, maybe. It was fun, and honestly as a young kid in the midwest I was exposed to tons of music I probably wouldn't have learned about until college. These forums were SUPER active, with subforums for Electric/Acoustic/Bass/Drums/Recording - basically like Musician's Lounge here except a subforum for every megathread. And every subforum was pretty drat busy.

now its all down to one main forum, check it out now: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=132

the stickied Community thread has posters who have been around since 2001, im (pretty sure) those are real people in there, but the rest of the threads are loving weird with "posters" asking kind of silly questions with that same weird curiosity mentioned in the above quote. likes hes an example:

and a response:

it does appear that these started back in 2015-2016. i c/p'd that block of text into google and it brought up a Reddit post from 2016, from what appears to be a real user.

The link in the OP is insane conspiracy theory nonsense for the most part. It's intensely focused on 4chan as like, the nexus of all Earthly culture and seems to believe that all cultural developments are due to nascent AI attempting to cater to 4chan users.

One specific claim is that there are a bunch of superhero movies because AI algorithms are trying to shape the culture in a way that pleases 4chan due to the theorised bots being trained there. Another is that /pol/ going alt-right is the AI shaping and leading the discourse towards insurrection in order to control 4chan's remaining human users towards some sinister goal.

There's also a bunch of standard fash stuff like how reduced homophobia is the result of an AI shill operation and the OP openly talks about how he hates black people and loves lolicon and the modern internet is a hollow shell because those things are less acceptable.

Then in the timeline at the bottom it goes into Alex Jones-style stuff about DARPA and "the US government gained the legal right to use propaganda against its own citizens!".

That said, yeah, bots post anywhere it's free to post and though it's easy to spot them right now if you know anything about AI (a lot of them are still just Markov chains, and even simple neural nets are easy to identify if you know the signs), in a few years it probably won't be. But this idea that 4chan Skynet is guiding the culture towards having mind control chips implanted in its collective teeth is wacky nonsense.

lol thank you, didn't read far into the link before rolling my eyes out of my head and closing. I do think it is an interesting theory that could become true though.
Also, I think why I keep coming back to this site is that it is so unlike the rest of the modern web, while still maintaining an active(if somewhat small) userbase.

I used to ask that philosopher ai gibberish questions like "how many typhy-rays are in a gorglemep" and it would give me very interesting and novel answers so if anything I think this bodes quite well for the realm of human entertainment

Just imagine, some day you might be able to ask an AI to generate "a tv sitcom in the style of seinfeld but starring talking vacuum cleaners" and get quality entertainment

Kind of like the star trek ship computer!!!

Just wanted to say that I agree with you 110% and I'm glad I'm not the only one to feel this way. I've been online for a very long time, even before the web on boards like VA PEN, and I loved the growth and creativity of it. 1993-1999 or so were magical. But sometime around 2003 the whole thing started to kinda "dry up" outside of a few sites, and since 2014 or so it's basically been totally dead. It's interesting to have a name to put to the phenomenon now.

I feel like every week or so I'm ranting in real life to someone about wanting to destroy the internet and make a new one. They always look at me like I'm crazy.

I spend a lot more time outside now, the bit of the net I can still stand or need to use (bills, etc) only occupies me for about 15 minutes a day.
