mcgovern and mondale are the two leftmost nominees since fdr but iunno about comparing the two. mcgovern was probably more comparable to goldwater because his anti-war policy was fairly out of step with contemporary public opinion

COMMENCE THE RITE OF SHITPOSTING

Wasn't Reagan not uber popular yet in the early 80's? IIRC it wasn't until he left office that he was officially crowned God Emperor by the GOP and the dem establishment

So the Dems throwing that race in 84 is an extra lol

no he was vulnerable on the economy until '83 and was extremely popular in '84, hence the results

Unemployment was still persistently high in 84 but inflation had plummeted and so did oil and general cost of living.

that and the electoral blowout and their subsequent effects on their respective parties

though idk what Mondale's effects were, his loss didn't lead to triangulation did it

yes, the anti-union right wing of the dems became ascendant following '84 and they took over in '92. joementum's probably still writing a good effortpost lol

yes, but unlike Goldwater, McGovern didn't lose because he was the furthest left, he lost because people liked Nixon more

if he'd held off his campaign until 1976 he would have won in a landslide

yeah he also ran a terrible campaign in general

saying you back your VP 1000% after it was revealed that he had received electroshock therapy for depression and then dropping him a few days later isn't a great look

Really good read on McGovern.

Would like to see something similar for Mondale

though this is the article's only reference to Walt:

quote:

The nascent DLC argued that the defeat of Carter’s former vice president, Walter Mondale, in 1984 further demonstrated the failure of McGovernism, despite the fact that Mondale’s platform of deficit-slashing “New Realism” actually marked the party’s continued shift to the right.
