I don't know, but is the soup to bread bowl ratio correct to classify this as a soup or more of a liquid sandwich?

It's properly made from scratch french onion OR clam chowder that has a very slightly runnier base than you're expecting. That poo poo that comes in cans where it's like school paste is too drat thick, however, Bar Harbor brand is p good. But for this of course I'm again talking home made, obv.

you know, I've eaten many cans of clam chowder in my day, but I don't think I've ever had homemade or restaurant cooked before. To be honest ordering soup at a restaurant always feels weird to me.

Get the fattiest soup bone you can find. Hard boil for at least 2 hours. Skim if you feel like or don't. It doesn't matter. I skim, my grandma didn't. Leave the bone and fat in. What falls off is it's own decision. You can pick out the bone when you're done but leave it in through the process. Add medium dice: Carrots Onions Celery Potatoes Cook another hour or two at a full boil. Add water when necessary. Cook it longer if you want. It'll be fine if not better. Keep a rolling boil while you're cooking. Salt and pepper at the table. Serve with Saltines. Best soup you'll ever eat. Do not deviate from the recipe. If you use any knowledge of proper cooking, you'll ruin it. Just follow the directions. When in doubt, cook it some more. The Saltines are required. *Do not sauté anything*. That will ruin it.

quote:A soup is a kind of food. People make soups by boiling things in water. Then they put the things they boiled into a bowl and eat them. Vegetables are in most soups. You can also put meat in soups. Soups that are thicker than normal, with more meat or vegetables, are stews. The liquid in soup is broth.

Doublepost with some soup advice. Easiest homemade chicken stock in the world: 1. Go to supermarket (or costco) and buy one of the cheap pre-roasted chickens. 2. Take the chicken home & tear off all the meat and other parts you want to eat. 3. Everything you don't want to eat throw into a pot, cover with water, simmer for at least an hour. 4. Strain solids from liquid in the pot. 5. Boom, Chicken stock. We make a lot of soups this way. As a bonus you can throw some of the torn-off meat back in to make any kind of chicken soup.
