There are many thing I love about half life, including the 10 minute train ride where you learn Gordon is an MIT graduate in advanced theoretical physics. You need that kind of training to push a shopping cart 14 feet.

Actually fighting the combine soldiers was fine, I thought they were ok for enemies in a pretty old game. The problem with them is that they were like 80% of the enemies you fought in the game. I feel like in HL1 the human grunts aren't more than like 50%. Maybe, Idk. I haven't played HL1 in forever.

you should play through hl1 again too, imo. check out black mesa if you want a modern paint job on it

I'm just thinking about how if Valve sold out to Sony or some mega-corp after Half-Life 2 came out, we'd be up to like Half-Life 12 by now. Instead they haven't even made HL3. Valve is rear end.

The crazy thing about Half-Life was all the 'total conversion' mods. It basically influenced the entire creation of the Source engine to better handle all of the things people wanted to do in it. Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat... the roots of modern multiplayer FPS might come from Quake and Unreal but so much of the gameplay beyond deathmatch comes directly from Half-Life mods.

Valve is terrified of the number 3. Fact. Look at the evidence:

-Stopped at Halflife 2
-Stopped at Halflife 2 Episode 2
-Stopped at TF2
-Stopped at Portal 2
-Skipped straight to Left 4 Dead!
-Then made a L4D2 and stopped there
Edit: Also I guess they made DotA2

They will never make anything with a 3 in the title.

Yeah, it was a lot more varied. Black mesa was a better setting too.

And finally I think that the enemy variety was really weak. In Black Mesa you kept getting to see stuff like the bullsquids be kind of scary and able to kill you all the way to the end of the game. In HL2 it was ... combine soldier after combine soldier. Just sort of bland after a while.

FPS games shifted from the player gunning down unholy abominations to focusing on gunfights between humans after America's forever war in the middle east kicked off.

the one time they did have three in the series they avoided numbers altogether: counter-strike, counter-strike: source, counter-strike: global offensive

Black Mesa is really good. I always enjoyed the southwestern area 51ish setting more than generic eurocity in halflife2. You're right about the enemies too.. The soldiers in the first half life feel more dangerous and fun to fight than the combine. Maybe it was just because of the more cramped spaces in the fist game?

Same. OG HL and Black Mesa even moreso is like urbexing a vast military complex that has been evolving for half a century. There's parts that are really old 'dawn of the cold war' looking, as well as super modern labs. It's all extremely right up my alley.

I followed Black Mesa since like 2004. When it released minus the Xen chapters I was blown away. Didn't miss Xen because it was so underwhelming in the first game. What they eventually accomplished is kind of mind boggling to me. It's so much better in every way.

Both HL1 and HL2 blew my mind in a way that very few games have and not too many have since. With HL1 being one continuous, flowing level divided into chapters, at that point I had never felt so engrossed in a game's world. Half Life 2 wowed me with its technical achievements, art design, sound design, etc.

I love subtle details in the art/sets/audio design etc that build the world and story without being in your face about it. poo poo like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlId_Cg-8bY

I love this type of stuff.

Today, I think HL1 holds up better as a game, as evidenced by Black Mesa being really good. HL2 plays more like a really good tech demo, but I'll always look back on it fondly.

The Half-Life 1 days really felt like the golden age of modding to me. Nowadays anyone can throw up some crappy items or skins on the Nexus for the Elder Scrolls or Fallout or whatever, but Half-Life 1 had such an abundance of really high-quality total conversions that I haven't seen matched. Stuff like Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic, Firearms, Action Half-Life, the Specialist, Frontline Force... I could go on and on.
