Mid 2000s. It was either the MSPaint your awkward childhood experiences thread - Maximum Sexy Pigeoh still has an av from that thread! - or MOMENTS: A Game of Consequences. I liked that one but I went back and read it and it's almost mind boggling how the thread just doesn't engage with the story prompts.

I started reading the front page back when Cliff Yablonski was still getting updated, so early 2000s. I didn't really go to the forums until around 2006, and that was mostly reading tech support job horror threads while working a tech support job. So the first thread I remember is some vague tech support job horror, I suppose.

I lurked a lot but the Weekend Web, terrible porn reviews and stuff got me interested. The ghost story threads made me join. I was all in it for Tansy stories until it was too obviously a gimmick and then I stuck around for GBS and E/N. Trump being president brought a lot of lols that scared me even more than the ghost stories, tbh. I still miss the ghost stories. I have the It is a Mystery.pdf saved and to this day some of those stories still creep me the gently caress out.

I don’t know if it was the first thread I ever read here but I remember long ago someone posted a lot of writing about a childhood friend who believed she was married to an anime character and became increasingly delusional and insane about it. The OP did some really great comic illustrations to go along with her updates.

Someone linked me to the Lowtax's chat pranks. His humor at the time was perfect for the period (and my age range), and something struck a chord with me which led me read the front page every day after that. I got years of enjoyment out of the frontpage and the articles, while mainly lurking in the (then free) forums, which were my first introduction to legitimate example of an (unhealthy) internet hivemind. The hivemind only got worse by the mid-2000s, and I abandoned the site and forums after that.

I think the first thread I read (or at least remember reading) was posted by this dude who'd racked up like 13k in credit card debt in a short time by being an irresponsible dipshit - he posted this huge sob story about his woes and asked for money to help pay off the debt and then signed his post. Everyone who replied signed their posts with his name and generally just made fun of him. I think Planefucker and Zombaby were the first major sagas I followed as they happened.
