Stars intentionally sabotaging the movie for kicks, a former director placing curses on the production from the woods nearby, actors being held hostage by their contracts and threats of legal action, it’s got it all! Val Kilmer is a total freaking whackjob, he was a fanatical Christian Scientist his entire life which almost killed him I'm surprised he caved at the last second and got medical treatment for his cancer to be honest, most just die (He was incredibly gorgeous too, mmmmm Madmartigan[sp?] from Willow was when I first noticed him...) watched To Live and Die in LA last night with friends and man, that movie is quickly rising in my list of absolute favorites / best movies ever made. It's just good from start to finish, it draws me in and there are just layers and layers to it. It is absolutely a Mann movie in his usual formula, and god it's just executed perfectly. I dunno of any complaints I have about it. And the soundtrack is incredible. Imagine thinking Wang Chung was a one hit band. The ignorance. Their music fits this movie so well and I am usually someone who prefers movies with more instrumental than vocal music (don't ask me why) but their music just works wonders to further set that perfect period setting And boy oh boy, the twists in that movie. I keep writing too much here and I have to go to bed, just go watch it, and if you somehow haven't seen that movie and you're reading this fix this William Petersen and Michael Mann just... I dunno. There's a magic present in this coupling

Yeah To Live and Die in LA was directed by William Friedkin. The guy that gave us this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeT-GPcxkXs And this too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHnDyOr0DfI Also this movie which wasn't great per se but has its moments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xeih_2WtK48 Bonus points for Portland being the setting (tho they dressed up the Hawthorne Bridge to be a stand-in for the Steel Bridge). It should be noted that The Hunted shouldn't be mistaken for this The Hunted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXz56zULA7I

Also I will go to my grave holding the belief that the big twist Chance getting loving killed, dead is one of the best twists in cinema, it still catches me a bit. no punishment, no justice, the protag-of-sorts just died and now we are trying to find out who to anchor ourselves to. and there's no big ceremony, there's no 10 mins of sad music, he just gets fuckin dropped When I first watched I think I yelled "wait what the gently caress" out loud

it is such an effective gut punch for a movie which draws the viewer in so much it is not how this should go e. I've been wanting to go in and finish The Wire, and that's another thing the overall arc of To Live and Die in LA reminds me of, a Wire arc. It just maybe is not gonna go how anyone plans it to, and then oops it just got much worse and now the good guys are doing what exactly Code Jockey fucked around with this message at 02:56 on May 26, 2024 |

There's a show called Patriot which is an Amazon Prime exclusive, one of the few really good ones, that does that arc very well. It got cancelled after season 2 when there were 3 seasons planned and completely buried to the point where you'd never know it existed unless you went to Amazon Prime video and searched explicitly for it, which I think is partially because Prime Video has a very right-wing slant in its catalog while the show is diametrically opposed to right-wing ooh-rah patriotism. Anyway it's unironically one of the best shows I've ever seen and while it's more of a dark comedy than serious drama it is all about the arc of things just getting progressively more wrong and hosed-up in unexpected ways and specifically how that weighs on the people involved with the situation.
