I expect that that problem is not beyond the limits of engineering, but that it would make the MRI machine cost exponentially more than it already does (and they're already very very expensive), so I don't imagine anyone would really bother to make a change like that to a machine that works fine already.

So apparently quiet MRI machines do exist: https://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2013-09/silent-mri/
But all references I can find are from the date of the press release back in 2013. Here's the official product page: https://www.gehealthcare.com/products/magnetic-resonance-imaging/signa-works/silentworks

But not a lot of info other than that. Is it being produced and sold and currently in-use? Tough to say.

No matter how much paperwork I process, it never goes away. It only increases.
last time I was in Japan I got an opportunity to visit JR Central's offices. Among my souvenirs from the trip was an infographic indicating something like, 90% of trips made between Tokyo and Nagoya were made via shinkansen while 10% were made via plane; for Tokyo-Osaka, that ratio was 85-15; for Tokyo-Okayama, 67-33; and finally for Tokyo-Fukuoka, 40-60. I flipped my room upside down trying to find it and couldn't, so I was wondering where I can find that information online.

My better half says it looks like orchid roots or some kind of monstera family plant. It’s apparently normal that they sprout roots above ground, although that is indeed a heck of a lot of roots even for an orchid.

I bought a new dog bed, but my dog doesn't like it. I'm guessing this is at least partially just it not being his old bed and he'll acclimate in time...but also it just reeks of lavender. If I can smell it so easily, then it must be pretty awful for his nose. Is there anything I can do to it to help neutralize the smell, beyond just leaving it out in the sun?

It’s a philodendron actually. I ought to have included a picture of the entire plant, but it’s big rear end. It’s about 1m20 from stem to leaf, with some 20+ leaves - I bought it about 18 months ago with just 3 leaves.

Casino Sportsbook question.

If you bet on every NFL game, and always bet on the team with the better odds, and you used a consistent betting ratio, where you bet higher if the favored team is highly favored to win, or lower if the teams are more even, could you make consistent money, over the course of a whole season, 272 games, would your winnings consistently be higher than your losses at the end of the season?

They have computers using algorithms to analyze thousands of games and stats, and experts weighing in, to determine the odds. They gotta be right more than 50 percent of the time.

I would be deeply suspicious of any plan to "consistently" make money by gambling. What you should investigate is where the money goes. Who gets paid when a bet is made? Who gets paid when it pays out? Who paid to run all that statistical analysis, and how do they make money?

There's also the fact that even if you can find an edge, there's no guarantee that it'll go in your favor in the short term. For example, let's say you determine, correctly, that there's a 51% chance that Team A will win, and the payout is 2:1 if they do. That's favorable odds, in that on average you'll make back 102% of your bet. If you could bet $1 each on a million games (note: not a million bets on 1 game, but a million bets on a million different games) at those odds, then you would expect to end up quite close to $20k richer by the end of all those games. But that's not typically possible in the real world; instead you have larger bets and fewer games to work with. And that leaves the door wide open for a run of bad luck to wipe you out.

Betting lines are not the oddsmaker saying who they think will win. They’re putting lines up to draw in the most possible money from both sides to cover their book.

In sports betting there is a fee for making the bet and the return you get on average will be less than that fee. You need to be able to improve on the public information to be able to make money. It is technically possible but very few people are able to do so unless they are also running a scam on other bettors.

When you say "with better odds", are you talking about the money line? If so, that's already weighted against your plan by the payout amount.

If you're talking about betting on the favorite and giving up points, then obviously that's worked against your plan by the size of the spread.

Yeah this is important to remember, if someone's giving you odds on something they're not doing it to lose money, they're doing it to get enough people to bet on the thing that they still come out ahead.

You can get lucky and make a lot of money gambling, or you can get unlucky and lose a shitload, but if there was an actual way to guarantee winning in gambling then nobody would be offering the chance for it. Maybe you can learn to count cards or something but most people who try that also end up losing money.

The saying "the house always wins" isn't just something a salty dude on a losing streak said, it's the fundamental design of gambling in general.

I'm only familiar with betting on soccer, where the odds are often attractive, but there's always three possible results because ties are so common. I feel like you can grind out meagre winnings from matches with clear favourites, but if you want anything more than meagre you need bigger stakes, at which point you're seriously entering Gambling Territory. if there's no ties in American football betting(?), the odds must be a lot lower too

Not off the top of my head, but you'll most likely have to buy another sink drain and just take the removable plug from that. You can try to match the exact plug, if you can read that brand name. I can't from that photo.

There aren't many different sizes of sink plugs, so find on that looks like it will fit. You may have to hit up a variety of Home Depot/Lowes/Menards/other hardware store to see if you can find one that matches. Should be 10-25 bucks

Parcero is super Colombian. You could use a word more generally understood in Hispanic countries like "hermano," "amigo", or "hombre". For something more regionalized, I know "pana" is used by Dominicans, among a few other countries.

I can remember one instance where an attendant came around and shut the blinds herself, rather than asking. She seemed rushed (but calm) so I suspect it was because there may have been a visible problem or challenge with the plane and/or landing procedure and she was advised to do it to reduce panic.

Apart from that I've looked outside as my plane landed on every flight I've taken.

My recent-is experience had been them asking passengers to close the windows after you arrive at the gate, not before actually touching down.

I wonder if this is an international vs domestic thing because every single flight out of Australia I've taken has been shades up. The way it was once explained to me was that you don't want eyes needing to adjust to what is happening outside in the event of an emergency. Yes, because it's still possible to leak your passwords in other ways. For example, perhaps one day you're tired and mistype a domain name, and you end up on a malicious typo-squatting domain that looks just like the real site and collects all the usernames/passwords that people try to use. The bad guys won't know or care anything about the security on your local password store, but they still have your login credentials now. Having 2fa on that account would stop them from logging in to that site.

I see.

In that case, would storing the initial 2FA codes in my password manager (so that I can program a replacement/backup 2FA key) be a security risk, given that you need a 2FA key to get into the password manager anyway?

If your password manager has cloud sync it could be a problem. I would write down the 2FA setup codes along with your master password for the manager on a hard copy in a couple of places, like one at home and one at a trusted spot, like your parent's house or wherever your birth certificate is. Theoretically someone in the real world could use those maliciously (like a relative or SO), but it's probably still the best option.

It does have cloud sync (well, I store the file on Dropbox).

If someone were able to get a hold of it, though, they wouldn't be able to get in without the password and 2FA key, though I guess if it *were* compromised the consequences would be worse because then they'd be able to 2FA all my accounts...

Hm. What if I store the codes in a different encrypted file hosted by a different cloud service? For writing them down I'm worried about losing the copies.
