I remember a friend of mine back in the Quake III days telling me that the easier difficulty bots are actually more complex than the hard difficulty ones for that very reason. Actually, I personally have a deep seated desire to kill ratling gunners and i literally cannot advance until i've slain all of them in my immediate area. I don't know about Ratling Gunners (mostly because as soon as they appear someone has whipped out a handgun or I've sent them sprawling), but Gutter Runners have the most amazing talent for smoke bombing 3 times in the span of a second and then appearing next to you for an instant pounce. I can't quite figure out how I get pounced sometimes because when I hear the sound cue, I know that gutter runners generally appear from the direction that all players backs are turned, but even when I've scanned the area about 3 times, they'll still come from the side in an area they couldn't have been and the trajectory proves that. You can often see (at least if you play on 100hz+) the gutter runner in its leap just before it transitions to the "stab stab stab" animation and it's always at my ankles rather than from the air. I recommend holding X to do the third person view and just panning around, at least you'll be able to see it for sure. Also, PSA, because it was happening real god drat often yesterday to me: always be holding your block. if your melee weapon block slows you down, use a tome. Rats spawning out of thin air behind you and landing free cheap shots is a rampant annoyance. 3 times that happened in a run of magnus, the one that almost made me just restart the map was in the tavern just before hitting the rooftop, there's a small room between stairs and a point of no return, there's usually nothing in there. I go in, take a look around, and as soon as I've turned my back, I take a hit from a rat must have come out of a dresser drawer half its size. There are faint noises when rats scurry out of their holes, but not this time. It was literally the only rat in the area when it appeared.

I haven't played this game since it originally came out. Have there been any major balancing changes or anything like that since?

Only in the Bright Wizard's case. The Beam Staff got nerfed a bit and the other staffs were given significant buffs, but Fireball still remains at the bottom of the ladder. The Bolt Staff is now a "Right click + left click = win" staff because it automatically homes in for multiple piercing headshots like the Trueflight bow. Conflagration charges way faster. Beam is still #1 but the former two are definitely viable. I still wouldn't trust bolt staff though because you know those little rats that scurry around on the ground randomly placed? It can and will automatically target them over the two legged rats.

The more they collect, the better the loot.

If you don't charge after sackrats like a loving loot starved treasure junky foaming at the mouth, ignoring everything else, firing wildly and shredding your allies with friendly fire, you play Vermintide wrong.

Is Gunpowder the worst mission and/or least popular? I've been trying for two days to beat this mission but I've only managed to find other players twice and we died in less than ten minutes both times. Although in general I've found it tough to find normal difficulty groups. Mostly seems like people are on hard or nightmare. I see more easy groups than normal actually, which I find odd.

Normal's in this weird spot where it's substantially harder to play it than Easy, but in realistic terms your loot isn't a hell of a lot better. The jump from Normal to Hard is a lot less, difficulty wise, but reward wise it's MUCH better. I think Black Powder mostly suffers from being the map that people exploited early on to get phat lootz and now people are tired of it. Cataclysm was super easy due to some bugs, so even in this thread there were people running it dozens of times to get oranges.

The more popular maps all have grims/tomes. If people are looking for a quick run without books they generally go ramps as its piss easy and has no rat ogre. It is a bit of a shame, I do get a bit sick of magnus/engines/enemy below etc

I do fine on normal but might as well go with everyone else on easy. I've tried hard a couple times but I feel I don't pull my own weight owing to a lack of gear and experience. I'll just start harassing the steam group for help on gunpowder when I get home from work

If you want the best loot just play nightmare games and never waste your time with non-tome+grim missions. And if you see me on I'm guaranteed to win.

Nightmare's the only real difficulty. It provides a challenge that can still be beaten relatively easily with good teamwork and gives good loot. Hard is too easy past level 15 and with any real loot and Cataclysm is for well-geared characters / good teams in need of a solid challenge.

I'm kinda getting sick of avoiding stormvermin patrols. Every time I hear the familiar sound I hide with my teammates - then someone gets bored, ducks out to see where they're at, accidentally draws their attention. Everyone starts swearing at their foolishness but I'm secretly happy as really we're all pretty used to dealing with them by now, you don't need bombs/pots really. It takes like 10-20 seconds to kill the lot vs 2 minutes waiting for them to slowly walk by, during which who knows what other specials and hordes spawn.

Yeah I think I'm going to adopt that tactic from now on. I did it today accidentally by bolt staff chaining the lead SV. Said 'lol my bad' after, no-one gave a poo poo People just instinctively hide I guess, habits you pick up from when you're starting out

Patrols are easy as poo poo (provided you keep the trash in check) and up until recently I didn't know you COULD hide from them.

While I was still properly in Hard mode i got lucky and received a Pfalz Harquebuss (orange rifle for Kruber) as my first orange. Kills Stormvermin in one body-shot on Hard and penetrates 3-4 targets. Catching the patrols while they were still in marching formation was beyond hilarious. I made so many people stunned in amazement by taking out the entire patrol with two shots.

I recognize that trueflight arrows are not exactly pro-zone, but I absolutely love the fact that I can hear a gutter runner spawn, turn around, fire off an arrow blind, and 60% of the time kill the guy without even seeing him.
