Today was a random awesome beer day for me. I was in the right place/time to try the latest Sam Adams Utopia and then later in the day a Russian River Supplication. The Utopia was awesome, I thought the alcohol was pretty restrained for the 29% ABV it had. Lots of raisin, dark fruit and sherry in there. The Supplication had a lot of barnyard funk and a decent amount of tartness, I enjoyed it a lot. Also had some Italian made (blended?) Framboise that was really good but I don't remember the name of it.

Today was an awesome Zwanze day in Louisville and probably my favorite beer drinking day ever. I had: Fou Foune 2012 Fou Foune 2011 (On draft and it was the best thing ever) Kriek Mamouche (Which sucked and tasted like straight pickle juice) Gueuze Lou Pepe Kriek Zwanze 2012 (Tasted like gueuze with rhubarb) St. Lamvinus Cuvee St. Gilloise (Awesome beer)

Cismontane Black Dawn Imperial Stout. A little ho-hum, but I definitely like it. A little on the roasty side but only a tiny smidgen. I think I'll go back to the store and pick up the barreled version.

danbanana posted:Good time hanging with crazyfish at WLV for Zwanse. The headliner was very good; The use of rhubarb was pretty ingenious and resulted in a nice bitterness to the beer. I thought Fou Foune was better, though. We were lucky enough to get a second glass of that. We were also one of the lucky few who got Hillstead's Susan before it kicked (probably faster than anything else there). Top-tier IPA. Makes you wonder if the hype for the brewery is true. I've never been this hung over this long before morning. Really loved Zwanze 2012 and Fou Foune. Hill Farmstead Susan was definitely one of the best IPAs I've had in a long while. In addition to WLV's insane taplist, I headed to the bottle share table in the back and got to try about 1/4oz of Black Tuesday, which could be awesome with a few years on it but what little I had was waaaaaaaaay too hot. White Chocolate is probably the best smelling bottle of all time; didn't get to taste it but goddamn, what a smell. Goose Island Laura (bourbon barrel Juliet) went on tap near the end of the night and I couldn't resist - really really delicious. Got really lucky at WLV's total shitshow of bottle sales. Walked away with bottles of Cantillon Gueuze, Iris, and Fou Foune as well as Jester King Funk Metal. Really great day.

SnowDog posted:Decent selection -- got myself a "Pick Six" of beers I've never had: quote:- Bear Republic Racer 5 Our local brews thing was neat, though no competition for Zwanze Day. The most interesting thing was Joseph James's Oaked Sour - it had huge lacto presence, smelled like sauerkraut and tasted kind of like it too. One of the most food-friendly beers I've ever had, and I'm a big advocate of beer/food pairings. As far as I know this beer isn't being bottled because it's a two-year project by the new head brewer who's changed breweries since the batch started, but if you get somewhere that has it it's well worth trying.

Jeez I want to try that too. I read here that Brooklyn Chocolate Stout is good right? I found a lil liquor store near me that I hadn't been to before. They were stocked full of the chocolate stout, boltcutter, and a bunch of other fun stuff. Cash only, but I shall be returning.

Called ahead to a liquor store just across the state border to see if they had The Abyss, since it never comes to my town, and that's the closest place. They said yes. Drove up there, and lo and behold, no 2012 abyss, but two bottles of the 2010, still priced at original retail!

I suppose this is one downside of living in a big beer city, it's drat hard to find little gems like that. Sit on one to let it get old & crusty, but crack the other open now. Every little hole in the wall liquor store around me now seems to have a "great selection of craft beers!" (a quote from one place's vinyl sign). In that location's instance, it was a row of Stone, a row of Ballast Point, and a promotional cooler from Rockstar with bottles of Alesmith bombers. The prices were on level with other places, though, so I'll have to add it to my list of places to swing by when looking for something with limited local distribution...because I'm always hoping for the sort of score Oldsrocket_27 came across.

Wow, I wish Sam Adams made their Hazel Brown a year round. It's a shame it's lumped into the variety 12 pack as it's better than almost all of their year-round offerings. If you like hazelnut flavor this is for you, not artificial tasting at all, nice mild roasted profile to it. I love this. Edit: Can't tell if post below is trolling or not. Also Dogfish Hellhound on My Ale is solid, lots of citrus and a strong bitterness, but it's too pricey to really suggest. Midorka fucked around with this message at 03:47 on Dec 3, 2012 |

Cracked open an Epic Big Bad Baptist (#4) while watching the Panther's lose hilariously (yet again). At least the beer was satisfying! Really solid BA coffee stout. I wouldn't put it quite at the same level as KBS, but it was pretty close. I liked the coffee flavor in it a lot, I'd like to get my hands on some of those beans, but there was a little smoky/peaty-ness at the finish that was a tiny bit harsh for my tastes. Pretty small quibble, though, I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. And now I'm watching Sunday Night Football, smoking a cigar and drinking a Brown Shugga'!

I'm just starting to get into tasting a bunch of different beers (hooray for make-your-own six-pack!) and Lancaster Brewing's Winter Warmer is fantastic. Very malty, a bit of chocolate taste, and light alcohol taste for its 8.9% ABV.

Cracked my Stone Mint Chocolate Stout tonight after dinner with a fellow beer nerd. The aroma was goddam amazing, it smelled like a glass full of crushed Girl Scout Thin Mints. Flavorwise I didn't love it, but I admit that my palate was kind of blown from several other beers we had beforehand. It was good but I didn't find myself wishing I had 10 more in reserve or something.

Anyone else get serious soy sauce/umami notes off the Sam Adams Gingerbread Stout or the SA Triple Bock?

FreelanceSocialist posted:Anyone else get serious soy sauce/umami notes off the Sam Adams Gingerbread Stout or the SA Triple Bock? I had the Gingerbread Stout last week and don't recall getting anything like that off of it. It was really sweet but not in a Southern Tier-like fashion, and definitely better than the Bison Gingerbread Stout I had a while ago which I couldn't detect any gingerbread flavor in at all. I can't wait till I get over this cold I have so I can open my Mint Chocolate and enjoy it properly. Some beers are tasting okay to me right now but I tried drinking a Breakfast Stout over the weekend and it had a horrible aftertaste, so clearly my taste buds aren't firing on all cylinders again yet

Yeah, more than likely. Oddly enough lighter beers aren't too off for me at the moment, as I had a Red Oak and a couple sips of a cranapple-wheat beer on a bar crawl this weekend and then an SA White Christmas before bed last night and they all tasted fine. My friend gave me her half-finished Breakfast Stout to finish off at the bar though and it was torture not even being able to enjoy it. As long as I'm okay by the time my roommate comes back from Utah I'll be happy. She's promised to bring back some goodies for us to split. Can't wait to see what she comes back with!

Previously had one, yes. I figure it is yeast autolysis in the Triple Bock and some sort of extract brewing poo poo with the Gingerbread that is giving the flavor.

I went to the store for butter. Just butter. But I just had to peek in the beer section... $60 later I have some Meddler to enjoy. Also: No way this can be good, right? I mean, as a stout it might work, but in the bottle it didn't look dark at all.

Angry Grimace posted:I think barrel aging must be an acquired taste because the words "Imperial Stout aged in Bourbon Barrels" on a beer label gives me an almost irresistable impulse to drop money. Unless its Oak Yeti of course, which just tastes like the sap of an evil tree. I had a bottle of Oak Yeti in my closet for most of a year, which seems to have been long enough for the woody harshness to fall off and make room for the chocolate flavor. It's on tap in my neighborhood and the difference is like night and day. That said I kinda like the barrel flavor.

Grabbed the last six pack of Brown Shugga off the shelf at Wegmans. I'd been hoping to finally try it, and I am not disappointed. Tastes like a good west coast ipa, and you can taste the brown sugar? I'm into it. Also grabbed a four pack of Widmer's Black IPA. Underwhelmed, but the bottles are dusty and the bottle date was over six months ago. It seemed flat. Oh well. Aaaand I got a bottle of Victory's Red Thunder. I liked their Baltic Thunder so I'm looking forward to popping the cork on this. e: Mm, I like this Red Thunder. This probably sounds crazy but it tastes to me like Hell or High Watermelon, but if it were made with red wine instead of watermelon. Manky fucked around with this message at 01:23 on Dec 4, 2012 |
