The wheel stands were awesome. A few were funny, like the car flipping on it's roof, but the car at 8:40 doing a 4.47 second pass with it's front wheels off the ground most of the way was unbelievable.

Do any of those cars have like Halon systems or anything? A nitrous oxide or methanol fire scares me more than anything else that could happen in an automobile crash. Also, how come not one of the safety crew that ran out to any of the crashes had a fire extinguisher? I woulda thought they'd douse the whole car after a crash, like how they cover a plane in foam no matter what after ever crash landing. Like it seems like it'd be a lot easier to rinse of fire extinguisher stuff than to rinse of 3rd degree burns. Perhaps its a testament to the nature of their fuel cells. whose tuggin fucked around with this message at 15:33 on Aug 15, 2011 |

A lot of them do have on board fire suppression systems. As far as I know though they aren't required until you get to cars running sub 7.5 second 1/4 miles. Halon is no longer allowed. In many classes for slower or sometimes all cars a fire extinguisher is required to be mounted inside as well.

Unless the car is on fire during the crash, you won't really see them with an extinguisher. There's usually an ambulance and fire crew at one end of the strip, so unless the car is already burning it's more important to get the power off and driver out than it is to bring an extinguisher. It's way more important or a steward to always being an extinguisher in road racing since the emergency response may not get there for a few minutes depending on the track.

Still pretty close. Block's chassis comes straight from m-sport, drivetrain is a bit different it seems. wrc has a 1.6l (built by the same place), and the transmissions are different. http://www.motoiq.com/magazine_articles/articletype/articleview/articleid/2081/ken-blocks-gymkhana-4-four-video--ford-fiesta.aspx

From "bigger turbo inlet" to "still pretty close" is a tall order when the car has: a higher capacity engine twice the horsepower a different gearbox many other non-WRC-compliant touches Yup. Practically the same car. Like an M3 and a 320i.

The setup is more Focus WRC than Fiesta WRC with the additional Fiesta Euro rallycross freedoms. That being said, as long as the cage and suspension mounting points / whats in the homologation papers are respected (I would say that would be the case) it's not out of the question you could change the car back to Fiesta WRC spec. It's those parts that are nearly impossible to change over and thence if you respect the basic shell it can be WRC again - and for stage rally you do need to respect the cage homologation. You can not change the cage and keep it's homologation, it has to be re-certified and that costs $$$$$ - you cant just weld in a design even if it complies with the standard patterns and materials. As a for instance, despite the fact I know the cage in my STI has a design flaw in it, it has a FIA homologation and that's critical, I cant weld in new poo poo. Even with the known flaw, as it's got the FIA number on it, it's allowed in any event that they allow my car.
