One game’s fiction that I loved to death when I was 12/13 years old was a robot fighting game on PC called “One Must Fall”. I recently took another look at it and I can’t figure out why I liked it so much.

I mean it's not really a very good fighting game either frankly.

I'm pretty sure 12/13 year olds are genetically programmed to love giant robots fighting each other so you didn't really have a choice. Also the killer soundtrack made the whole thing seem even cooler.

Around that time, PC had gently caress all for
Fighting games. There was that one and another one called FX Fighter that I adored and poo poo like that is the reason I missed games like the original XCOM or mid 90s RPGs.

I remember cheesing this one move that one guy did which was like a force push and I would win by ring out on everybody. I think it worked on the final boss too.

I think there was an .ini edit or an ingame cheat where every hit would cause just absolute gallons of blood to gush out whenever anyone got hit.

The developer screens and the intro itself were ridiculously long for a fighting game. Also this game was peak teen edginess the game.

Okay finally got to the point in Halo 2 where you get the opportunity, as a Sangheli, to commandeer a USNC tank with a handful of your idiot-alien friends and I found it to be a way funnier scene than I probably should have. Not quite sure how the ergonomics would work but whatever!

EDIT: These scenes actually remind me a lot of UT2k4's Onslaught maps, just cruising around town in a tank or a technical and running dudes over while the bots plink away at dudes.

For all of its faults Halo always had really well done vehicle sections

Just ran across this, Japanese guy making a very "80s cyberpunk anime" FPS. From what I played of the demo it feels okay, a bit on the simple/Wolf side, but the boss for the demo episode turns into a (fairly basic) bullet hell thing and you get a time slow unlock halfway through, so maybe the later episodes will be more evolved.

A streamer I like played the 32X version (for a real winning combination) a while back. There are special moves, but at least in single player, you have to unlock them by grinding like a bastard to upgrade your karate belt.

I gave it a quick poke, and "stiff" feels like a good word for it. It does feel a lot more Marathon-influenced than any other fauxtro-FPS I've seen in the last few years, which is a nice change, but I'm not a huge fan of the item pickups and world textures being low-res and pixelated right next to the high-res enemy sprites.

The only fighting game I've ever played on PC. So much production in all the wrong places.

You mean "One Must Fall: 2097", because "One Must Fall" had no robots in it.

Also a good reason to like it is its classic tracker soundtrack.

I think its not as popular as doom and doesn't have regular new entries like doom (maybe slightly harder to port?)

A Switch port with direct access to Quadiccted would be amazing.

If your Switch is hacked/hackable, there's at least one decent Quake engine. Got gyro controls and everything.

This might have the sparsest animation set I’ve ever seen. The moves have like 1-3 frames of animation per move. gently caress, this looks like it would be absolutely intolerable to play.

The video says it was for Windows 95 and released in 1995. Which probably means it really was designed for 3.1.

I read a thing the other day where someone was complaining that the technology in Halo isn't advanced enough to be five centuries in the future, and someone else pointed out that they only set it then because 2552 is 2+5 2+5 is 77.

I have no idea why the argument came about but someone mentioning 7s did get it to quiet down, I guess.

I figure once humanity reaches a point where we occupy hundreds of worlds scattered across the galaxy (let alone discover FTL travel) the proliferation of technology slows way the gently caress down and you'll get the equivalent of like isolated Amazon tribes next door to the Metropolis where every house as an anti-gravity rift and the only thing in common is that their cars go really fast.

Also being in a war where the casualty count numbers in the billions can't be helpful.
