FYI, Amazon has the Mackie CR3’s on sale today for $79.99, and the CR4’s for $119.99. I’m pretty sure they’ve been recommended in this thread before.

What for? Is it portable? Why isn't her phone good enough? What about a chromecast or Sonos or google Home?

For portable use, I think her phone might be good enough but all of her music is on this old iPod and she is used to its interface.

I just realized that to get her songs from the iPod to whatever MP3 player I buy, she will have to transfer them from the iPod to the pc and then to the new player, meaning we'd have to put iTunes back on the pc. Guh.

Nope, iTunes doesn’t do that. You’ll need to find 3rd party software that does.

iExplorer will do it, but it costs $40 if you need more than a few songs. Blame the music industry for those iPod restrictions.

Have you considered Spotify in her phone?

I work less than 5 minutes from Audio Technica's headquarters and they're having their annual warehouse sale on December 7th & 8th, up to 80% off.

Just got back from this...turns out the discounts aren't as steep as advertised, or else the 80% off stuff sells out within minutes of the doors opening. Drove by at 9:30 and there was a line wrapping around the building (which is about a city block long.)

Turntables were at most ~20% off or were entry-level models (which I already have at home) so I passed, but picked up a pair of scratch/dent M50x's for $70.

I went around noon. The best deals were the scratch and dent stuff IMO. Picked up a pair of M40x for $40. The most basic entry level turntables were like 50% off. Everything else seemed to be $20-$30 off.

Did you find any damage to the headphones? Mine are fine, with the exception of the coiled part of the cable was a bit out of round.

Went back after work to get my wife a pair of Bluetooth headphones and overheard one of the AT employees saying most of the scratch/dent stuff is returned unsold merchandise from retailers.

As someone in a ground floor apartment and the owner of two 12" subs, I can only get away with it because I'm on the ground floor, because I have very understanding neighbors, because don't listen to super-bassy music, and because I turn it way down after 19.30-ish.

In your situation, I don't think there's a good solution that lets you keep the sub. There is nothing you can do, short of full acoustic isolation, since low-frequency sound just tends to travel straight through any kind of damping or blocking material you'd reasonably try to use in an apartment. You can try putting the sub on a paving slab or one of those dense rubber playground mat things, but I don't think it's going to do much of anything.

Get good headphones instead.

And by 'full acoustic isolation' Kozmonaut means physically removing the room you're in from the building it's attached to and adding an air gap all round it.

BBC built a studio in my city centre, it's in a building that's mixed use so BBC has the entire bottom floor, the floors above it are apartments. This BBC studio was initially used for live bands as they wanted to promote new music to people, this was before the apartments got finished. Once people moved in they started complaining about the noise so BBC stopped doing live music until they'd spent 6 months and £250k on sound insulation. Bands came back in but they still got noise complaints. At that point the BBC decided to no longer use the studio for music. So there's really only so much you can do with treatments, even hundreds of grand's worth. Volume down or headphones annoyingly :/

Try having a gf who complains when you turn your receiver up to like 55 out of 100 (not to mention her dog who is terrified at the slightest noise). I like it fuckin loud. Klipsch's slogan is "pissing off the neighbors..." but mine, after hearing my towers went and bought a whole set himself. Our houses are pretty close in a fairly unorthodox, rural property layout and we can easily hear each other whenever we're listening, and neither of us have subs yet. Poor guy's got 4 kids. I leave my grilles off, but he cant do that poo poo. Has to mount his TV basically on the ceiling.

The UK is garbage for rolling over in these situations. A bunch of venues in my hometown closed because fancy new apartments were built years/decades after places that did live gigs, and the snotty cunts who moved in had the gall to complain. Hey assholes, don’t live like music? Don’t move next door to a loving 1,000 cap venue.

After several places almost went out of business from legal trouble they finally passed an ordinance in SF that you can't sue over noise from entertainment venues if your housing was built after the place existed. Now they're still going out of business but at least it's not because of lovely condo buyers.

I live in an apartment and have a sub but I keep the volume pretty moderate unless I'm watching a movie.and even then I'm usually done before 11 pm. I calibrated my sub to be flat [most people prefer +3 to +10] and I don't usually listen to music loud enough for it to be super bad, especially if it's jungle or something similar with a ton of bass.

Lovin' every minute of it.
A good sub that reaches nice and deep without distortion still sounds great when it's flat or even attenuated. Low and clean goes a long way toward bass perception, no boosting necessary. So try turning the sub level down a little at a time. Say, a decibel every other night, until you start to notice the bass being unacceptably weak.

They've actually changed the laws regarding this recently, we'll see how it works out though for protecting actual venues that have been there since forever and developers building housing 100ft away... It's now putting more emphasis on who was there first.

https://www.wardhadaway.com/updates/new-laws-protect-music-venues-noise-complaints/

quote:

Introduction of the principle into general law would give added protection to premises to fight against such outcomes. The Planning Policy would not change the ability of people moving into existing residential properties to complain about noise coming from a venue, but it allows for a more balanced approach to the problem.

Richard Arnot, a Partner in Ward Hadaway’s Licensing team, said: “The increase in demand for housing in built-up areas means some residents are coming into conflict with existing live music venues.

“There needs to be consideration between the parties as someone shouldn’t be able to move next door to a music venue and decide afterwards that music is a nuisance. In the same way that it wouldn’t be right for a live music venue to install a sound system without consideration for nearby residents.”

The most common use case I have for them will just be Netflix/videogames on a very not intense vizio sound bar + subwoofer from Costco, with some music in between. I really don't listen to anything that people in the same room would call Loud Cause I'm used to sharing a house with people and being up way too late at night, so I'm more trying to go from like medium/quiet to silent mostly for my own peace of mind. I had just heard from people that putting your sub on like a block or a rug would make just enough of a difference to bring it down from noticeable to ignorable. Like my last downstairs neighbor never said anything but I had new shaggy carpet in that place.

Putting your sub on something might help with rattling. My office sub would cause the radiators to rattle until I put it on a piece of styrofoam. It's not going to do anything for the sound itself, but if that's an issue it's worth a shot.

Kind of yeah, the floors/ceilings are old as hell so I though getting just like one bit of seperation from actually touching the bare hardwood floor would reduce the effect of like touching a speaker directly to a big empty chamber, but I'm not really smart at sound so I dunno what actually does anything. If there's no dif between it being on the floor and being on top of a block/rug/whatever I'll just start low and hope no one complains

What thread would best be able to point me in the right direction? I'm not quite setting up a home audio system, nor are these speakers for my PC or turntable.

I want to buy a speaker for my shower.

There's a ton of waterproof speakers, shower speakers etc. out there but I was wondering if there's any good resources for decent recommendations?

- My criteria are splashproof / water resistant (doesn't need to be fully waterproof I don't think)

- Bluetooth and USB-charged battery preferable,

- decent battery life, so, 4-5 hours maybe?

- Nothing "built-in", preferably easy to hang under the shower-head or stick to the wall somewhere.

Go second hand. The only thing really in that price range new are the Pioneer Andrew Jones stuff that has Amazon reviewers going *****! Amazing! while others seem more luke warm on them.

I paid $200 second hand for my JBL S310 IIs that have nice big 10” woofers and give me a lot of sound for my $.

Non-tower wise you can look up Philharmonic Audio which is a dude who usually makes very high end stuff, but also does a budget set of bookshelf speakers that are off the shelf speakers he then modifies with his own crossovers and a few other things for a reasonable price.

E: wait, RCA connectors? The only thing you can really look at is powered monitors.
