If you look at e.g. Abebooks for "1984", you'll see just how amazingly many covers that paperback has had. Most of them terrible. That's good compared to most.

I recently read The Killing Star by Charles Pellegrino & George Zebrowski. Pretty unimpressive book despite the rather ambitious concept (first contact with aliens is them immediately destroying >99% of humanity and then hunting down the survivors). Written in 1995, which puts it in the awkward zone where things often feel dated but not enough to be charming. They also occasionally refer to real people which usually hasn't aged well; for some reason in the book's history, Robert Ballard discovered the Titanic - true - but became a 'Bluepeace' extremist and in 2010 destroyed the wreck with a load of depth charges - not true. The book generally wasn't that subtle. I might have missed out on some of the themes however because they were made explicit in a Usenet conversation between fictional characters and real people (SF authors like Asimov and Gregory Benford, as well as SETI astronomer Jill Tarter) THAT WAS PRESENTED ENTIRELY IN UPPERCASE AND CONTINUED FOR NEARLY EIGHTEEN PAGES WITH A FONT THAT DIDN'T FEEL DESIGNED TO BE READ THAT WAY. WHAT ON EARTH WERE THE AUTHORS THINKING? MY EYES SLID OFF THE PARAGRAPHS EVERY TIME I TRIED TO READ WHAT WAS ALREADY A FAIRLY DRY SEGMENT OF THE NOVEL. Bonus that I only discovered as I was writing this: Charles' wikipedia page mostly consists of other people saying how often he makes things up in his non-fiction books.

I read it years ago, enjoyed it but it is not a good book. It's that classic SF where the plot exists to hang together a bunch of vignettes, infodumps and cool ideas the author had, without much characterisation or coherent story. And the cool ideas are cool (like aliens immediately wiping humanity out, pretty much successfully) but it reads like an assembly of parts. I was going to complain about Operation Exile, by E. Hoffman Price, published in 1986, which is full of :biotruth: and the bad guys are the socialists and the Marxists and civil rights and special education, for some reason. . . then I flipped to the back for the author's bio and HOLY CARP he was born in 1898 and fought in WW1. So he's merely an outdated Old Fogey, and not prescient about current buzzwords. It was a standard world-building technique of "take current obnoxious trends to their extreme". I still won't be letting any chuds borrow my copy; they might get ideas.

Famously Kirby misunderstood a joke in the books. Two Flowers is a character in the books that wear glasses, so he was called four-eyes. On the cover of the books he's in Kirby depicted him as having literally four eyes:

I don't remember Pratchett's descriptions of Twoflower off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure he was supposed to be wearing modern tourist clothes (loud floral shirt), not whatever that clown outfit is. I guess Kirby didn't get that joke either?

Clothes on the Kirby Discworld covers are consistently quite similar to that outfit - vaguely melty with lots of jewels and pointy bits.

That might not be the book with the cameo: I recollect there's a scientific conference and an unnamed figure delivers a finding or idea, amidst lots of talk from named real world figures. Perhaps in the epilogue, he writes HAHA THAT WAS ME and says what actual meeting it was based on. Although, from his Wikipedia entry, I wonder how much it can be trusted.

AmandatheJedi (I know I know) did a few videos on the 1D self-insert fanfic with the serial numbers filed off series known as After. She's also done videos on the 50sog series told from Christian Grey's perspective, and the official translation of 365 Days. Another youtuber called WithCindy did a few videos on the Court of Thorns and Roses series. I like to watch youtube videos about bad books when I'm cross stitching.
