I guess I just didn't feel that this was worth a chiffhanger chapter end, like yeah, even though Sanji will probably isolate and give them some message or something, Oda ending the chapter at this point felt like we, the reader, are supposed to be buying it. Otherwise there's little emotion at this chapter's end.

Well yes, but One Piece is aimed at twelve year olds. We'll likely spend next chapter having this information spelled out to the reader.

If Sanji uses this as a quick way to explain to luffy what's going on while fighting him, I'm all for it.

If it somehow turns into a Robin scenario despite everything Sanji's fundamental understanding of the crew and especially Luffy, I'll have to seriously start questioning Oda's decisions. But I doubt it'll be that.

I wouldn't worry, this is really an apples-to-oranges comparison and I think a number of you are missing the point.

Robin didn't know the crew that well and didn't mind ditching them and sacrificing herself for their sake until the memorable "wadda live!" scene where she realizes a little late that the Straw Hats are worth believing in and really comes into her own in gaining that newfound sense of loyalty, whereas before because of her history she could never trust anyone.

Here, it's very deliberate in showing how agonized Sanji is in his decision-making. It's practically spelled out for you how tortured Sanji is feeling right now and is putting on an act to buy time/save face to resolve the situation. He was planning on resolving this by himself because of how tenuous and delicate the situation is re: Zeff and his hands being held hostage by these blood relative assholes, but of course like always Luffy comes barging in, so now Sanji has to revise his plans and buy time to deal with this new developing situation.

I honestly think Oda did a fantastic job drawing out these scenes and the visual composition.

Also, I think the bit about Big Mom controlling the weather and the Sun/Wind is due to haki, as evidenced by the Whitebeard/Shanks clash early in the series. I don't think it's due to a super-advanced Clima Tact-type device but actually mastery of haki to the point of manipulating the world around you.

I know that's probably a can of :can:, but that's my theory as of now.

e: Sanji knows it's a genuinely lovely thing to do to a good friend, but he presumably feels like he has to carry that burden for the sake of the bigger outcome. Even Reiju/Vinsmoke sister looks disappointed in Sanji while the other brothers think it's hilarious.

Its either super-advanced Haki, super-advanced use of her fruit, or a combination of the above. I lean more toward her using her fruit's power to make the sun and the clouds her homies who do her bidding.

You clearly see the sun and clouds under her control in chapter 827 (or around there).

It's because Sanji's the expendable son. The Vinsmoke that marries Pudding will become part of Big Mom's crew, and Judge doesn't want to lose one of his good sons when he can just get rid of Sanji again.

Whoever gets married apparently has to settle down with her in Totland, and Judge wants to keep his sons in his army, under his control.

It's not going to be a real fight. Sanji's going to put on a theatrical display in front of his family while Luffy's going to initially wonder why Sanji isn't fighting him seriously until enough poo poo clicks in his head that he takes a dive. Nami's going to wonder WTF because she knows Luffy could have smashed the poo poo out of Sanji if he really wanted to, weakened or no. Reiju's going to see through it all since she'll have gotten an idea of how strong Luffy actually is back when she cured his poison, but the bros will be utterly convinced that Luffy's weak as poo poo for being beaten by the weakest Vinsmoke, so they'll have a good laugh about it and not take him seriously when he shows up again. Judge will remain skeptical, and when he hears that one of Big Mom's commanders got taken out he'll connect the dots and see the ruse, and put some kind of plan into motion to deal with it.

I'm actually really curious about how this will play out, because I think you might be overestimating Luffy's intelligence. Especially when he's angry and hungry.

I'm curious to see if Nami is gonna hijack even more of Big Mom's poo poo later. We can assume that her control over weather is because she stuck two poor souls inside two dangerous weather patterns: between Nami's penchant for manipulation and her pre-established meteorological mojo, maybe she's gonna get a major upgrade from this arc.

LupusAter
Sep 5, 2011

As we learn more about Big Mom, I feel less and less convinced that she's going to be the kind of threat that gets dealt with by Luffy's fists. Her powers are incredibly well suited to amass and mantain her huge empire and territory, but they don't seem suited to an individual, close and personal fight, with the caveat that this is One Piece and any power can be used in a fight. Even Zeus and Prometheus feel like a natural extension of her modus operandi of "cross me, and very bad poo poo will happen to you and everybody you care for", and if, as theorized, they're very powerful homies Nami will deal with them (feels weird to type that).

chapter 780 page 15 and into parts of chapter 781, law speaks in the "voice of all things" word bubble that is used when luffy hears several other things that cannot speak, this is when law was presumably "killed" (lol that was never gonna happen). law is not speaking, they are clearly his thoughts but he is also communicating with luffy.

the lots of lines word bubble used in this scenario is only ever used in a few instances, such as when luffy hears the sea kings talk about noah (who again, aren't actually speaking...)

that said my post was kind of a half-joke.

Half-joke is fair enough.

But the reason it was in those speech bubbles is Law whispering to Luffy from another location. Because that Dead Law was actually one of Doflomingo's flunkies that Law switched places with after his arm was cut off but before Doffy riddled "him" with bullets.

its super weird how its used, its always used to deliver information that is absolutely not being said by anyone:

http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/818/14

http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/818/15

in that panel to panel transition, its stated what happens, but then luffy says for them to talk about what happened. which means no one heard those words besides (potentially) him. similar thing to the flashback, no one is talking but the text bubble delivers information thats being thought.

in the law scenario, its used actively (not in a flashback), but its used sometimes in flashbacks when someone is speaking but still in the same panel:

http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/782/4

but its used here like so:

http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/647/11

all other voice bubbles have consistency to their use except this one, which seems to only apply to some level of omniscience (hearing things that aren't being presently spoken).

so idk what the hell it is, but its probably the voice of all things and luffy can learn the history of people and thats why it shows up in flashbacks randomly (its common in the sanji flashback when there's no one actively speaking).

note that this type of word bubble only becomes prominent post timeskip and only during unspoken moments and flashbacks.

fwiw, this is the first time i think its used:
http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/391/10

and it doesn't start showing up actively in flashbacks until brook.

it seems weird because this is the only kind of box that is used so wildly. maybe its oda adding sort of an echo or hollowed effect to the voice.

He's a fishman with a devil fruit. His energy gets sapped by being in water like all fruit users, but he can still breathe underwater. As long as someone can salvage him from under the sea he has the benefit of a fruit without the downside of assured death in water.
