I still get a chuckle out of the memory of GH's wedding photos in the WitE thread that had a "SOVIET RESPONSE" banner like halfway through

Another day with not much happening – but the carriers have set sail today to do some more damage.

We should vote on his top 10 gently caress ups for his regdate anniversery. Would be interesting to see what's after turning off airframe production and blowing up a planet. We all know there is a hefty list.

Was that the invasion of Hokkaido? IIRC that actually went pretty well all things considered. The invasion of Iwo Jima would defiantly definitely make such a list.

Yeah that was Iwo Jima, Hokkaido was part of Operation Topknot.

They switch to bombing out troops in Rangoon.

Well, they did for one run. Then its back to the airfield.

Finally! We bring something down!

We force another force into retreat.

It has to be the time he lost an entire carrier fleet by sailing it into land-based air with no CAP and only DEs as escorts.

Attempting a gunnery duel with a continent make the list?

Iwo was something that could fairly easily have happened irl, an invasion fleet sailing into an area far more prepared than they thought - scary and sad to see, but not the biggest fuckup ever.

The second iwo wave not being cancelled, now there was the fuckup.

The Kiddo Butai provides some fire support.

Then go hunting.

These guys come in late and have to deal with fighters on their own.

We see many waves of Liberators today.

The Kido Butai is making its own trouble.

They brings down another ship.

We do some real damage to a troop convoy.

We see some nice air to air combat!

We hammer an American sub.

We are forced to retreat for a change.

Air to air losses even out. That's good.

That's a nice list.

A night time raid takes out three of our planes.

More troops land at Luganville. They then surrender as soon as they hit the beaches.

The Kiddo Butai's fighters have some fun.

Another plane is hit on the ground.

The Kido Butai being down another four ships.

The carriers bring down some more ships. Its nice to rule the waves.

Whoo, a sub. That makes it a really nice day.

Very few troop kills from that convoy.

The troop losses reported are just those killed by the actual strikes against the ships (and usually underreported). It doesn't list what happens when you try and swim to shore from 100nm out, let alone vehicles and artillery pieces.

Do we actually have confirmation that that is the case? This was certainly my hypothesis as well, but last time we talked about it I don't think anyone knew for sure.

We start by getting lucky.

Then less lucky. They do take a few torps to get this.

It seems to be the Halibut's day.

Of course. I have no idea were the escorts are,

Jesus, they are right up in my harbours today!

This could be going better, but kudos to the balls on these sub captains.

Oh look, Betties! Ohhhh. Dammit.

Today is not going my way.

Really not going my way. That's a good number of Betties lost there.

Well. Buggery.

At least we confirmed an old kill, but that was a brutal day.
