Watched Suspect Zero last night. It's was alright. Closest thing I could compare it to would be a feature-length X-Files movie. Good cast, but the plot doesn't really make much sense.

Just watched Would You Rather cuz the geef and I decided that Searching wasn’t a horror movie. We both really liked it. I loved what a downer it was especially the ending and anything with Jeffrey Combs or Sasha Grey is a 10/10 in my book.

Any movie with both Jeffrey Combs and Robb Wells is pretty much guaranteed to be a hoot.

I will say, though, that I can't look at the latter and not see Ricky from Trailer Park Boys. I almost feel like Would You Rather leans into it, too.

Hot drat Mimic is way underrated. I love the way it is shot, everything has a nice texture to it. The people are sweaty as hell, the subway tunnels are wet and dirty and the creatures are slimy as hell. Feels almost a bit like Aliens.

Hell yeah Mimic owns. :D

They did a couple of direct to video sequels to it but I assume those were really bad.

I rented The First Purge yesterday and I wish I could put my finger on why, but the Purge franchise (well, 2-4) are the peak of modern trash horror for me. They are full of social commentary for idiots with absolutely no subtlety, yet there's something so endearing about them that I can't get enough.

Just watched Society and I freakin loved it. Could have had a different ending though.

Was it their aim to highlight how the upper society "feeds" off the lower class or was that not their point?

Thats what really made it top 5 favorite. Body horror is best horror

Society very explicitly says that rich people are some inhuman species that literally eats the poor

Because it's not even social commentary at this point. The films have escalated at a fairly rapid pace from satire to outright socialist realism.

They are only "for idiots" if we buy the line that the entrenched conflicts of interests in American society are somehow complicated or subtle. The great thing about The Purge films is how they clarify that they aren't complicated or subtle in the least in and of themselves. That they are conceived of this way is part of the ideological fantasy. We should hope that, in the era of Trump, nobody is anymore speaking this way about nuance or subtlety, but it's clear now who the real idiots are.

I actually really enjoyed the last one. I think what your saying is correct at this point they're just " This is society" and there's no like i dunno what the word for it would be no illusion? No veneer or framing device beyond "White people want to kill black people". I am really interested to see how that film ties in with the series.

I watched the first episode of the series and it was pretty good.

Its why I like them but also why the last one is a total turn off for some people.

For all its supposed progressive values actual leftist movies coming out of Hollywood is pretty rare. It's not really "social commentary for idiots with absolutely no subtlety", it's just that you're so used to having to dig deep to find this kind of political (sub)text.

Oh don't get me wrong, it's my favorite movie of the year, it deserves to be. It's just very important to stress that for seven loving years people have been holding up these flicks as exemplars of genre movies over-extending themselves to make political points, and the mainstream critical establishment is more or less still writing/talking about it like that because what was once an ideological fantasy has morphed into a full-blown delusion. When everyone was po' faced and doe-eyed after the election of Barack Obama, people maybe had a reason to find this movie about rich white people hunting down poor black people with suspicion. Now there's no excuse, but you better believe the same ingrates who were finding them before and reaching and bending over backwards to find them again. They want so badly to be "normal," because the truth is just so horrifying stupid.

The Seventh Curse is bugfuck insane, both from a content and visual stance. I can't imagine any more crowd pleasing moments than a guy kung fu fighting a skeleton puppet or Chow Yun Fat shooting a demon in the chest with a rocket launcher.

no ur good, i watched all of them last two days (in order of 1 - 4 - 2 -3 ) & u can totally go into 4 by itself. I would recommend it, even, since its the only one I really liked (& it goes over some similar plot beats as 2 more effectively).
