I'm constantly looking at old Cadillacs and that is indeed way too much for an 80s Caddy, especially if its not in perfect condition. And I don't know if that year had 6 digit odometers, but when I look at old cars I just automatically add 100k to whatever they claim.

If it was a showroom quality ultrarare edition maybe that would be a fair price, but this is not.

If it really is just a transmission issue, then maybe. I don't think the 700R4 in those trucks has anything terribly special about it, and they're relatively easy/cheap to properly build these days.

The 348 was not well loved and had a bucket load of problems, including the highly amusing "melting control knobs" issue in the interior.

That said, 29K is an absurdly low price. I would imagine that car has, at the least, a salvage title and likely some other pricey issues.

Also you could buy a cheaper, slightly faster, and infinitely more reliable car in the NSX. I've heard that period of time was not good for Ferrari.

It is an option, but it isn't an option that allows you to honestly claim you've owned a Ferrari. Maybe some people don't care about that, but I'd like to be able to tell the girls I meet that I own a Ferrari, because if I tell them I've got NSX they will ask me if there's a cream for that.

So today I went to the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green (pics to come when I get to a regular computer next week). Afterwards I went across the street to a place that sells classics, Art's Vettes, where I saw this:

http://www.artsvett.com/vehicle.asp?x=C505

WANT

1970 Coupe DeVille, in really great condition. No rust or issues I could see. Website says $9999 but they quoted me $8500 onsite. This is pretty much exactly the car I want, with the color and interior (leather) I want. If you had said to me, "Astroman, what is the car you would like to see for sale at a classic car place while on vacation," this would have been it, and there it was, the only Caddy in the place, way in the back.

They have a ton of other nice cars there too.

A Bentley rat rod?

quote:

1953 Bentley R Type - a genuine, true barn find WITH A DIFFERENCE!! Yes, the term "barn find" is over used, abused, misused and con-fused. However this is real - genuine, completely unrestored with an historical significance. On February 17, 1965 this Bentley R Type was returned to the Rolls-Royce factory and received an engine swap with the actual engine from a 1954 BENTLEY CONTINENTAL R. During the 1970s it found it's way to California and in 1990 this antique classic car was driven into a barn in the San Joaquin Valley and simply left to rot away . . . apparently unbeknown to the owner was the truly unique history - history I can document with copies of the actual Rolls-Royce Factory Records showing that on February 17, 1965 this Bentley R Type was returned to the Rolls-Royce factory to install engine number BCC74 from a 1954 BENTLEY CONTINENTAL R - H.J. Mulliner Coupe chassis number BC75C !! "Back in the day" the Bentley Continental R was THE FASTEST four passenger production car in the world, and just a little over 200 were ever built. They're now worth up to half a million or more and this four-door Bentley R Type Saloon has the engine from one! I've recommissioned the motor - it runs very well with strong oil pressure, good compression, NO SMOKE, NO "FUNNY NOISES" and - remarkably enough - NO OIL LEAKS!! As you can see, the car is cosmetically completely unrestored, a true rat rod potential / patina queen that maybe should be preserved and conserved exactly as it is right now . . . or I guess you really could throw a bunch of money at it, but then you'd have just another restored vintage collectors classic, Personally, I'd fix the brakes, replace the tires and drive it as is - what a ride to take to Pebble Beach, the Baja Cantina or the Monterrey Historics! Attracts attention and great fun exactly as is! Factory sunroof, four-speed manual transmission, picnic tables right hand drive RHD. Too nice to hot rod, street rod.

A friend of mine had one and it was a decent enough car, pretty fast for stock and it only had normal old-car problems. For the car on craigslist I was more touting the abilities of the guy that put it together. He has had that car forever and fixed/improved anything it needed. If you are looking for a turbo Lebaron you should get this one.

I swear I'm not the seller, haha, its just that I've seen that car in person a few times and have always thought about buying it.

It's a nice car, but there's a couple things that would have me reconsider that one. The 500 is a beast of a motor, and there is something of an aftermarket for it if that's your thing, but it sucks down a CRAZY amount of fuel. My wee little 429 only got 8mpg, for comparison.

I also think that the car would look 100% better without the Landau top. Let the beautiful blue paint shine all over, man! Finally, I tend to think the look of mid/late 60s Cadillacs was a bit more dignified. I'm a huge fan of the stacked headlights they had in 65-68, though if you want the 472/500 block you'll need to stay 67+. In reality, the older you go with cadillacs of that era, the better. Keep your eyes open, nicely restored ones come up for sale fairly often. Save some bread and you'll be able to get one before long :) Lord knows I loved the hell out of my rickety '66.

It had a 427, 428, and 429 which are close enough (didn't the Cadillacs have the 500?). Mine has the 390, which gets like 9mpg around town (14 on the highway!)

Marketing designed chassis/brakes/interior, ancient engine design, awful to drive. That one would would be a decent sleeper if it didn't look like someone jammed a dildo in its tailpipe.

Well as far as the mpg goes, I know it would be atrocious, but this would just be a weekend/summer car, not a DD or anything like that. And the Landau top looked much better in person.

It says in that article that they were just prototypes. Trans attached at the middle. Pretty interesting concept. Like the pic shows, you could fit a lot of engine in a small space and AWD would have been a piece of cake. I keep imagining an 8-cylinder twin turbo AWD midsize Lincoln Zephyr or something.

I've read about this before, apparently that engine is just 2 I4s bolted together with the transmission in the middle or some such bizarre contraption.

edit: it's also identified as a 4-litre I8 so it wouldn't surprise me if it was just made of 2 Tempo engines.
