I didn't even know 2 had a postgame.

It doesn't, it's just a huge slog (for different reasons than 7 but I'm not arguing that those two are most prone to inducing burnout).

How would one even go about playing 3 nowadays? Just emulation, or is there a modern version about? Thought the DS and iOS versions didn’t start until 4.

There are mobile versions of 1-3 too now. I'd say they're definitely the best available versions of 1 and 2. I like mobile best for 3 because it got a fresh translation with puns and gratuitous colloquialisms and all, but it is somewhat compromised compared to the Super Famicom and Game Boy Color versions, because the monsters aren't animated and there's no pachisi.

I'm playing through DQ6 and have to questions. Is there any way to make the combat text autoscroll like in the mobile version? Also my main character is levelling way slower than any of the other characters. Am I doing something wrong? Do eating seeds slow exp gain?

Bongo Bill
Jan 17, 2012

Seeds don't affect EXP gain. Different characters have different leveling curves, and the hero's leveling curve is slower because he never leaves the party so he ends up getting more EXP overall, and for other reasons.

(Good to keep in the vault and take out if you want to grind, though)

In the original DQ3 fighters were pretty good early on but ultimately you needed to replace them due to the lack of gear. Ideally, you play a Fighter until the late 20s or so then change them in to a Soldier. They'll have more agility at level 1 than a pure Soldier would have by the end of the game.

When I played the SFC remake I used a Fighter for a lot longer because they weren't gimped but ultimately you still wanted a Soldier's durability (or Thief's utility) in most cases.

How crazy am I for considering playing through the entire DQ series (except 10), starting with 1? Will I end up sane in the end? Is it an impossible goal?

That depends. Are you playing the originals or remakes? Originals, yes you're insane and DQ2 will make you question your choices.

If you're playing on emulators then play the SFC version of DQ3 and cheese the gently caress out of Pachisi with save states. Especially if you want to boost stats on units without doing the god awful seed grinds.

Surprisingly we weren't explicitly tasked with searching for crash or functionality bugs, just English LOC/text issues mainly. We were told "the devs in Japan handle the real testing work" and to just log our findings (most of the time the devs on the Japan side never contacted us for more info and we never spoke/worked with them directly as we weren't allowed to because we were all temp contractors pulled in from a local agency. Only myself and one other guy had any prior "game experience"... and no one had prior developer experience aside from myself in the QA pit. Most of the others were just warm bodies to fill chairs the agency scrambled to find and hire. Nice guys and yes it was very much a "nerd club" and we liked to keep the work light-hearted because we had to get along for 12 hours a day stuck in this lovely room with a single bathroom for 20 dudes.... you do the math.

9/11 happened while we were working on DW7, we all came into work that morning, got news reports of what had happened and we all sat around watching the drama unfold. We were told basically all mail was halted that day and we couldn't get our weekly FedEx delivery from Japan of our new master discs, so we basically just sat around for 8 hours doing nothing. Some of the guys left, but with the chaos from the 9/11 thing, it was nigh impossible to leave due to traffic, so we pretty much just hung out.

After Enix, I went on to work at Nintendo of America on Windwaker, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion and a handful of GBA titles and even they too treated QA like cattle, so I wouldn't get all caught up that Enix's offices were low-quality from what you would expect in their corporate offices in Japan, they had a very small shoestring budget to release DW7 and pretty much closed the office right after we shipped it (to do their Squaresoft merger I believe). But just because Nintendo had better offices, they had a far worse lovely attitude and treatment towards anyone not a full time employee and/or developer. We were all bound under NDAs not to talk about anything internally or externally and most of the time we were escorted to/from and supervised inside a locked testing room like loving prisoners for 10-12 hours a day (two 15min breaks and 30mins for lunch). It was a grind. I was making $12.50/hr being one of the few "Senior QA" on those and it wasn't great.

I do not have good things to say about Nintendo, they can suck my rear end. They acted like a heavy-handed corporate thug. Enix on the other hand was just ghetto, but at least we had some fun and flexibility to make it through the long days.

dw7 was one of the first video games i played as a kid, it's really cool to be able to hear about some of the behind the scenes stuff like this. thanks for your work!!

Disagree about mobile 1 and 2. The SFC graphics are scaled very poorly and look generally awful. If that sort of thing doesn't trigger you, by all means. 3 looks to be a bit better, but as you said there's no animations and no pachisi, so dealbreaker.

I'd say SFC for 1-3, then DS for 4-6, but if you don't have a way to play DS games, the mobile ones seem competent (minus the lack of quicksave everywhere).

I love fighters/martial artists for the agility and insane crit chance. Far better to do fighter-->warrior than thief-->warrior, but when I play 3, I like to triple class my meta warrior with priest-->fighter-->warrior combo. You don't get much MP at all doing a 3x class, but it's great for that one or two emergency heals.

UNCONTROLLABLE

dq1 is like a one sitting game so you can probably blast through that and 2 without getting too burned out though definitely use a guide for 2 because its a nonstop vortex of bad backtracking.

3-4-5 are all incredibly solid games with no real chuff outside of parts of 3 being a bit grindy. I did 4 and 5 in a row a few years back and didn't feel a hint of burnout and finishing 3 a few days ago made me want to jump right back into 4.

6 is fine but it has a lot of pacing issues which 7 quadruples down on.

8 rules extremely hard and is a fun hilarious adventure start to finish.

These are all explicitly the remake versions.

The DS starts at 4, but Android at least has 1-6 and 8. I assume the same goes for iOS.

Don't listen to that other guy, I've been progressively playing though 1-6 on mobile over the past couple of years and 1 isn't long enough for you to care about how the graphics look scaled down (the only thing that bothered me about that game was how the music doesn't sync with the screen wipe when battles start) and 2 is a highly unenjoyable experience under the best circumstances but at least the mobile version lets you quick save pretty much anywhere.

I never played any other version of 3 so I have no idea what the gently caress pachisi is but I didn't miss it either and thought it was a really good game.

For Dragon Quest III, I think the SFC version is the best but I've heard it has some issues on emulators.

The mobile version is okay but the game's sense of scale and grandeur really takes a hit with the portrait orientation. Do whatever you can to play the SFC version.

Playing through it now and yeah, it's pretty fun. There are some annoyances that will hopefully be ironed out in the sequel. For example, reeeeaaaally would like it if anything blocking the camera's view of the main character could be made translucent. It would make it a hell of a lot less claustrophobic and disorienting when making any room with a ceiling.

The story is pleasantly rewarding, especially if you have any nostalgia for DQ1/DQ3.

Keep in mind that each new chapter is a fresh start. The story somewhat continues with occasional references from what I've seen up to ch. 3, but you don't take items/recipes/Max HP with you. You can, however, always go back to the other chapters at any time. They're each self-contained saves, so your stuff is still there. It's kind of a cool setup since each land has had its own unique gimmick so far, and the recipes and materials work with that. Each chapter also seems to start a little bit ahead of the starting point of the last chapter, or they at least advance more quickly. For example, you start with a hammer in ch. 2 instead of having to wait for the first teleportal.

This is just up through early ch. 3, so I might be wrong on some points if they change after that.

Google. 'Nuff said.

Try searching for pre-patched editions, else you might have to learn about applying translation patches...

Yes. Well mostly, I think. Not sure if this forum cares about ROMs anymore, but it's in the SA rules not to link them.

Basically you need three things - 1) a program to emulate the hardware, 2) a digital rip of the game data, and 3) a translation patch for that data.

1. If you've never emulated something before, you might want to stick to a standalone SNES emulator, multi-platform stuff like BizHawk and Retroarch might be a little overwhelming. Use Higan/bsnes if your hardware allows, or Snes9x if it doesn't. Do not use ZSNES, it is old and crusty and hideously inaccurate. Snes9x also has some slight sound issues with DQ1-2, but it's speedy and can run on anything nowadays. If you're looking to emulate on iOS/android, I can't help you as I have zero experience doing that. Not even sure if any of the programs I listed here have OSX versions.
2. Here's where I'm not sure I can post any links so PM me. You need a file of the contents of the cartridge. These are called ROMs. They are technically illicit distributions of copyright but there are places on the intarwebs where you can download them. I know of several of these.
3. Two options here - A) you can download the translation patch by itself (which are not illicit, search for it on romhacking.net) and use your emulator's auto-patch feature, which may have to be turned on in the settings, and you need to name the IPS file the same as the ROM (ie, if your ROM is "Dragon Quest I & II (Japan).7z" then the IPS file needs to be "Dragon Quest I & II (Japan).ips"); B) just download a pre-patched ROM. Actually there's a third option, and that's using an IPS program to permanently patch a copy of your ROM, but that's an extra step and is no longer needed for casual play due to emulator auto-patching.

Once you have all of those pieces, run the emulator software, load the ROM, configure your video/sound/controller/etc options and start playing. To save your progress you can either do it normally in the game, or use the emulator's save state feature (which you can do anywhere, even in the middle of a battle).

Plus, you know, they did 7 at all when it was basically a known bad choice financially going in, so MMOs aside I kinda feel like we’re golden.

Honestly I’m far more worried about the 3DS versions of the 1-3 smartphone ports getting left by the wayside.

You need to be a badass first.
I also just recently beat a Dragon Quest game last night on the recommendation of a friend (it was V and it was real good). Considering looking into 8 and maybe the rest of the DS ports

My actual first Dragon Quest was IX, but I sold it before I beat it since I got really bored of it right until the end. V is actually the first Dragon Quest I've ever beaten, but I'm genuinely impressed by its depth in story and how it had a monster recruiting system even before Pokemon popularized the concept. I do wish it had more music variety and gave you a little more direction on where to go (especially in Act 3), but it's an old enough game that I can overlook most of these issues just fine

If we're counting spin-offs then the original Dragon Quest Monsters could count as my actual first Dragon Quest, but I never beat it and in fact had it taken away as a kid because it had demons in it (don't grow up in a Christian home kids). Then I tried playing Joker and got super bored partway through
