I actually recorded dramatic readings of the Japan one/China one, but I started laughing in the middle of the China one and then decided not to post them, lol

She was cool and good.

After spending a month here, chilling with salarymen and the occasional host (airbnb close to kabukicho lol) I'm gonna start making plans to move to Tokyo. I know the horror stories, I know poo poo will probably be worse for foreigners after the olympics and the work culture can be legit psychotic... but i feel so much more at home here than in my own country its not even funny.

No. They are both pretty bad, but America is a special kind of dystopian hell where your employer holds power over your family’s health in its hands and can kick you out for any reason or no reason at all and leave you and your kids without health care. At least employees in Japan have a modicum of legal protection against being randomly fired.

It’s usually accompanied by your coworkers basically ignoring/avoiding you, and it’s pretty much the end of your career if you don’t leave the company. It does give people time to get their poo poo together and apply for other jobs if they are the type of person who can get another job, though. I have also seen people offered money to just quit, which is probably a sweet deal if you can get it.

Japan it’s more people stay at work forever (and sometimes feel more obligated to go drinking regularly), whereas the US it’s more “leaving the office at five but doing a couple hours’ work on the laptop in the evening,” to speak in very broad generalizations.

How does it work if you're not a resident? I had to go to a hospital once in Korea when I was just visiting and so I had no national insurance, thus my visit that would've been $10 as a resident cost a horrifying $100 for eye scans/specialist consultations/medicine/etc. I don't even want to know what that would've run me in the US.

I've gone to the doctor with tourist friends who paid without insurance. We asked in advance, the staff said Yeah OK, and we didn't have any trouble. With insurance you pay 30%, without you pay 100%. Still super affordable compared to urgent care in the US.

I remember working at a worker's comp position, and I recall a coworker having a client who got hurt in Japan, but they demanded going back to get care in America because "the care overseas wasn't as good as it was in the USA".

Umm tbf lots of Japanese doctors spend time in the US learning American medical practices and techniques. Despite the ridiculous costs to the end user, or perhaps because of it, the US medical system is actually quite advanced and innovative. Now if it's something simple like a broken arm or whatever, yeah, that guy is probably dumb. But I guess lots of people only trust the medicine and stuff from their native country.

What i do like about Japanese healthcare is that there are no GP's to get past and you can get treatment from a clinic right away. Like, I'll feel pressure on my forehead, no need to waste time with a generalist, just go straight to an otolaryngologist's to get an x ray and have my sinuses treated. The downside of that is probably that every clinic has a waiting room full of hypochondriac old people though. Also dentistry is terrible.

The AMA has lobbied to keep residency numbers low and put in standards that ensure that burnout is the norm in doctors so there is a culture of exceptionalism and resentment that prevents the field from effectively evolving for the public good. On topic: I’ve been here for exactly one day and my experiences have 100% convinced me to get a toilet with heater and bidet when I get home. Did shinjuku-type things today while getting over some mild culture shock. Next day is in odaiba!!
