Yeah, I can honestly see Steve ending up genuinely sinister. Gigi's "Lady of the Shard" had a villain who was a cheery, upbeat Old God who was friendly and enthusiastic right up until she rewrote your brain to worship her -- so it's in-genre for Gigi's work, and, I think, for the kind of "deeper Paper Mario" RPG setting that Cucumber Quest represents. Like, I don't doubt he'll have backstory and be treated with some sympathy; I just think it'll also involve genuine malice (with at least one fakeout).
