And yet the combat report includes a name for every ship, something I've always thought was really dumb in WitP. The report can be wildly false, but it's never just going to show "some sort of cargo ship" it's always a specific ship. Even at 29,000 yards, in the middle of the night.

   That would have been a nice kill.   drat we take several hits.   Another night raid.   We empty some racks into the sub.   We bring down a Liberator! That's a nice number of fighters.  A second one!  The carriers get a strike on the Mobile.  We lose another bomber.  We lose a number of planes to get another hit on the Mobile.  Now we see a landing, and hammer a couple of the ships.  The are forced to shock attack, and it ends badly.   That was a bit of a globe trotting day!

So 30 Zeroes can bring down one Liberator! On the upside, they were able to bring it down. Not all bad - hope your sub that was hit hard is able to make it back to base for repairs. And a base force as in a.. SeaBee unit? That is attacking a level 5 fort?

  We slam more shells into their landing craft.  Burn baby burn, its an invasion inferno!  This is going to be painful for them.  We are using a lot of shells here.  Surrounded by burning ships, the partial units that have gotten ashore are wiped out quickly.  Get the hell out of my harbour.  There was nothing really in the air, but we murdered them on the shores. I didn't even show all of the rounds of us pummelling their ships.  Apparently we trade subs.

20 September 1943 Convoy ON-202 comes under heavy attack in the mid-Atlantic by a strong force of U-boats armed with the new Gnat acoustic homing torpedo. River-class frigate HMS Lagan, Town-class (ex-US) destroyer HMCS St. Croix, and Flower-class corvette HMS Polyanthus were hit, the former being towed to the UK as a total constructive loss (30 feet of the stern being blown off and much of the rest severely warped) and the latter two sinking within minutes. Six merchant ships were also sunk.

Was there any time during the actual war the Japanese managed to repel an American landing by assaulting the beaches? I know that the Japanese switched to an inland defensive strategy by the time of the Battle of Peleliu given that direct assault tactics had been shown to not work, and I can't think of any major battles where an assault like this did manage to throw the Americans back into the sea.

Not that I know of, every time the US amphibiously assaulted an island, they either had numerical superiority, air superiority, naval superiority, or a combination thereof. The start of the Guadalcanal, with the Battle of Savo Island, is probably the closest the Japanese could've gotten to doing so.

Actually was there any landing by the Japanese that was thrown back into the sea? It's probably not a risk you take. All I can think of is actions like at Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands, but they were reinforcements to the defenders more than full scale assaults. No?

The Japanese landed what amounts to a single battalion of SNLF troops to evict what they thought was a couple companies of Australian troops from the tip of New Guinea, only to encounter a pair of re-enforced Australian brigades which outnumbered them five to one, and which were supplied with heavy close air support. The result was predictable.

  The night time raids on our airfields continue. I might switch some fighters over to see how it goes.  Yeah, I really need to do that.  We continue to get good hits.  The Empress Battleaxe takes several hits.  We bring down another liberator.  The burning ships get a few more men ashore, but their beachhead is crushed once more.  The invasion of Jaluit is a disaster. I love it!
