here's the thing about fry & leela -- fry was a self-centered dumbass with absolutely nothing to offer, and leela had self-esteem so utterly abysmal (she was, after all, ostensibly the only one-eyed alien in existence who grew up as a lonely orphan) that she slept with zapp brannigan & nearly married that shapeshifter who treated her like dirt. the only reason the fry/leela thing "worked" is because she didn't know she could do better, unless both of their characters were COMPLETELY overhauled in the post-movie era.

if that's the point you were trying to make, then i'm totally on board and apologize for my ramblings.

I was actually going more for "Fry was a relateable everyman protagonist that the target audience could identify with vs elfo who is a loving keebler elf from elf-town"

I mean you're right that on closer inspection their relationship was problematic but at least they got the writing 101 basics down

That was honestly the biggest disappointment about Disenchanted for me, moreso than the show not being particularly funny. The clingy loser getting a will-they won't-they romance was always a terrible trope and a show written for 2018 really ought to know better. The female griffon being called "bird-man" and by male pronouns was also super off-putting.

Netflix + Hulu + Amazon Prime is literally still cheaper than like the cheapest cable available.

Also Hulu comes bundled with lots of weird stuff. I went to the Sprint store to ask about my bill and apparently every Sprint account comes with Hulu? What? I’m not exactly complaining, Hulu has great stuff, I just didn’t know about it.

Basically if you pay for cable for any reason other than sports, you’re a baby boomer.

I dunno. I think even for the insanely wealthy, you still look at an offer to do a couple days of work for $250,000 or whatever x24 for the whole seasons and go "drat, that's a lot of money for not a lot of work"

2-7 definitely, i'd say most people will say 2-8 or 1-8 as well, but 1 & 8 are a teensy controversial with some people. 9-11ish is seen as "some good episodes some stinkers" and anything after is pretty bad.

Yeah, after watching Season 1 for the first time in at least 20 years it was a nice treat. Not amazing like the seasons that followed, but the only real stinker was the one where Bart goes to France.

If you want to see what people refer to as classic Simpsons greatness, nearly every single episode from seasons 3 to 7 are guaranteed optimal viewing. Season 2 is also really good, but it is not quite in the same tone and style of what people consider "classic Simpsons." I believe season 8 is also firmly in the classic era, but some do not, as you can see the very early signs of bad Simpsons emerging. Season 9-12 seemed bad at the time but are okay compared to almost everything that came after, though they are still more bad than good and very distinctly different from the previous seasons. Season 1 should not be watched by anyone who is unsure of what "classic Simpsons" is, it's worth watching but only for perspective.

Season 1 is way more of a mixed bag than it gets credit for tonally. "Bart the Genius" "The Call of the Simpsons" "The Telltale Head" & "The Crepes of Wrath" are pretty canonical episodes that have a lot of good material, and "Life on the Fast Lane," is just a loving good episode and I've quoted the poo poo out of it for 20 years.
