Return of the Obra Doom?

Hah, that's totally the first thing I thought of too.

Alright, so after a few patches that have gotten DirectX 12 and Vulkan APIs running correctly, and a few Nvidia GPU driver updates, I've given Serious Sam 4 a second shake. Performance-wise, it seems to run a lot better than on release day (even though it still seems to have the occasional, brief FPS hitch).

Do you like Serious Sam? No? Then you won't like this game. Do you like Serious Sam BFE? This is kind of like a better version of that--for whatever that's worth.

I'm enjoying it so far. Unsurprisingly, the story and characters are forgettable, and the cutscenes and collectibles are skippable. Even the dreaded "escort"-type stuff is barely an issue because the NPCs who periodically accompany you appear to be invulnerable, intangible (they don't block you), and don't seem to need to "catch up" to you to trigger any sort of progression. So they're barely even a thing, and it's easy to forget those friendly NPCs even exist when they're tagging along.

But the guns feel good to use, there's some interesting twists on the arsenal (like an underbarrel grenade launcher for your pump action), and the combat is genuinely challenging on Serious difficulty. The new gadgets, like an item that creates a "bullet time" bubble or a weapon that turns enemies on each other, actually come in pretty handy too. It's fundamentally more of the same from previous installments, but if that's what you're looking for, that's what you're getting.

Plus, the game still has weird secrets and easter eggs. I inadvertently triggered a unique "King" Werebull spawning when I shot a hidden sign, and--I'm not even sure how I figured this out on my own--managed to summon some kind of "companion orb" that bounced around killing enemies near me. No idea if that was supposed to be referencing something or what.

How’s the co op? Are the levels set up for 4+ people playing together? I like serious Sam, had a hell of a time playing Serious Sam 2 and then the HD remakes with friends, but BFE didn’t click with me.

Honestly, I have no idea. I haven't tried to do any co-op but my impression so far is that the levels can definitely mechanically accommodate 4 players but--somewhat ironically for the much-touted larger levels and high enemy counts of the underutilized "Legion" system--the game only supports up to 4 players...whereas previous installments could have up to 16.

I'm thinking that you'd bounce off of it if you didn't click with BFE: Visually and mechanically, the games are very similar. 4 goes a lot goofier with things, but you've still got the sprinting and overwhelming dust/smoke particle effects and general game "feel" of BFE.

The rocket launcher looks nice and punchy—particularly since there seems to be very little travel time for the rocket itself; it zips right to its target almost like a hitscan.

The rest of the weapons feel a little underwhelming in that video though.

It was an above average-ish shooter for its time, of course there were some bad stealth elements Being a 2000-era game but as a whole it was a fun experience. Up there with other console-ized shooters of the time like Nightfire and Cold Winter.

This is a really weird trailer, it's like a generic farcry trailer for a remake of an ancient shooter with the generic trailer music and everything.

I do not understand remaking XIII and cutting the one thing everyone loved about it which was the completely unique artstyle mixing with the sound design to create comic book panel look. That the rest of the trailer is trying to hype up XIII's completely bog standard and small arsenal is even more baffling.

I bet it won't even be unecessarily difficult anymore!!

I like how shadow is represented by simply inverting the color of the texture. I figure in-game every area is at full brightness and dark areas are "cheated" by using the dark version of the textures, it's a clever way to keep to the chosen aesthetic and its monochrome palette.

It also reminds me of another long-awaited project, Autumn Flock.

Yeah I'm interested to see what, if anything, they change gameplay wise. Would love to see the forced stealth stuff get the axe because there's a lot of it, but it just looks like they changed the art style (not for the better) and not much else.

Holy poo poo, I can't believe this finally came out! It was mentioned in this thread last year, and I've been extremely curious ever since. The title is awful, but if I remember correctly it used to be more genetic and asexual until something forced the dev to change it.

That dev, by the way, is a woman who spend a decade trying to bend the source engine to her will and include weird poo poo like flying vehicle sessions. It is an absolute labor of love. I don't know what the game will be like and if it will be any good, but it for sure it's going to be the undiluted vision of one woman leaving herself how to code and create this weird fantasy world. So strong EYE vibes, indeed.

Uh, no, it's the opposite of that. People pointed out the name's English connotations but after some deliberation, she stuck with " G String."

It's the Deus Ex/Do Sex argument. Gamers are notoriously horny so if you're scrolling through a list of shooters and see "G String" you're probably going to immediately halt.

What are peoples opinions on HL2 MMod? I'm looking for something to punch up the gunplay so it doesn't feel as anemic as base Half Life 2 without also diving into the (admittedly hilarious) insanity of SMOD.

Would MMod suit my needs?

Yeah, and it had the clone gun that could spawn any item infinitely until you crashed the game. It was fun spawning in a hundred headcrabs and then setting off a layer of tripmines to watch the havok engine go haywire.

I don’t know if it was SMOD or what but one of them had an interesting mechanic with scoped weapons where it would magnify the area visible in the scope (not the whole screen) and it made sniping a lot more challenging. I wish more games worked like that, although I’ve been told that it’s a lot harder on a game performance-wise.

I'm playing Arcane Dimensions, I think the last time I played was with Forgoten Sepulcher map. So I have now 1.7 and 1.8 maps to play.

I started with Tears of the False God, and man, this is good poo poo. Very nice visuals with a fairly original style for Quake, several custom enemies, it plays great with good flow in a non linear map with several layers, and the performance is good too.
