So basically he paid rather more than what the thing was worth to begin with, put up with the usual maintainance required for a almost 20 year old German sports car, and sold it for fair market value.

I bet he's now quite the expert on early 90s Porsches though. Has he started shopping for 928s yet?

When you like spending money and wrenching more than driving (a 3 speed automatic touring car), there is no substitute.

(yes, I know you could get 4 speed juice boxes and 5 speed manuals, but go ahead and try to find a 5 speed for sale at a sane price)

I think that's the real risk with importing a car from Japan. You should probably plan on spending a bunch of money just for maintenance and then some. Generally speaking, a person is probably far better off paying market price for either a North American spec car or one that's already been imported and made up to snuff.

Well yeah he would have been better off buying a 968 for $9k instead of $15k. I don't think being Japanese has anything to do with it?

Unless it's some kind of pristine garage kept show car (and 99% of cars are not), any 15 year old German sports car is going to cost at least $10k to bring up to snuff, no matter where it is from. This sounds outrageous and I did not believe it when I was first told it. I believe it now.

For some reason Japanese cars, even relatively recent ones seem to have horrific dry rot on rubber components. Add in being thrown into an ocean container for a month or two at 100% humidity with little to no proper prep, it's not a stretch that car from Japan have a real risk of being in worse shape upon arrival than a comparable NA car.

How big a sample size are you basing this on? I've seen plenty of Japanese cars, owned a couple, and have not seen this. There are plenty of problems with importing Japanese cars but this thing you are talking about sounds implausible.

Few admittedly. Maybe 12 or so? Completely anecdotal. Only from the guys that I've talked to that have brought in Porsches, BMWs and a few Skylines. One guy in particular I spoke to that's big in the E31 community think it has something to do with the fumigation they go through before they're locked up in the can. Just a theory though.

I'm far from an expert of course but being in a hot, humid can for so long with mystery spray from the fumigation, I don't think it's an incredible stretch.

To be clear I'm not saying that all Jspec imports without exception will need massive work nor am I saying North American cars don't because of course they do. I'm just saying the Japanese ones I've checked into personally have. If you've had good luck, that's great.

Looks pretty sharp. If I didn't have a hard on for a 62-76 era I'd love one like that. You can't find a car nowadays with that kind of styling.

That's a pretty darn good price too. Probably won't have many rust issues being not in the NE, and if there were some mechanical things wrong too, who cares, you bought it for $900.

The Aussie ones had the option of the 5 speed box. However we were stuck with the slow as poo poo 4K-C motor (1.3lt) and that particular model of Corolla was a porky bastard for that small motor.

Get a crate motor ($4000?) a good rebuilt transmission ($1000?) and for under $10G you'd have one rip snorting good time on 4 wheels on your hands.

Way for you jerks to read way too much into the ad. He didn't say "I HATE THIS DUMB OLD TRUCK" he said he didn't have much use for it. Who knows what that means exactly, but it's not being an "ungrateful little poo poo."

Seems like a pretty good deal to me, considering that is a Sport package one, which are all going for 10k plus around me. Sport means it has all the goodies for a Crown Vic, all the power options, better handling, etc. Also, it's an '04, so it will have the redesigned front end suspension making it handle significantly better than an older one. I'd go for it, especially considering that since it's a dealer you can probably talk them down a little more, maybe even a grand less, since it seems like they don't know what they have.
