More to the point of the thread, I've got a down payment on a Soloway Cygnus right now. Should have the rest of the money to pay it off within a month or so if work treats me well! I'm straight commission, so here's hoping I stay busy. This photo's from the 09 Seattle Vintage Guitar Show, where I met Jim (Soloway). We talked for a quite a while - Jim's a great guy. Friendly, talkative, and exceedingly knowledgeable. I played a few of his guitars at the show and pretty much made the decision right then that I had to own one. Since he won't sell me my favorite (his hollowbody prototype), I settled for my second favorite, the orange Cygnus! Here's the hollowbody prototype I would've loved to buy:

So I was recommended against the MicroKorg and towards the Alesis. The reason I was pro-Korg was because of its low price on the used market (~250 bucks). Is there a genuine dislike of the little synth here/ if so, why? While I know my way around pretty much all the bass gear there is to be had, I know basically nothing about synth stuff.

It all depends on what you'll use it for. Are you intending to learn actual synthesis (the construction of sounds) or playing some tones/noise? Is a vocoder important to you? Are you picky about how keys feel? They do about the same thing for about the same price, and owners of each will try to pull you into their camp (I own one, not telling which, though someone could easily guess based on my questions). People will buy one of the two as their first real synth and proceed to enter the Micron-MicroKorg holy war. The good thing about each being so ubiquitous, though, is that you'll likely be able to try each before buying, which is the important step in buying a synth. Hope this helps.

Bought a glass slide for my tele project, so I could play the blues instead of just have it all the time. Goddamn guitars are fun, and slides are awesome. Wish I could go back in time to early 2004 and tell me to renovate and revive the 80's strata-clone I later sold for as much as I picked it up for the year before.

Which delays are you thinking of here you guys? there are plenty of better sounding delays out there, but they are almost always 100$ more than the boss NEW (used you can get a DD-20 for pretty cheap). Plus, the tap feature is great, and will usually cost you on some of the better delays.

Well, I'd like to learn actual synthesis (or practice, as I understand the basics). I'm a bass player looking to expand my tonal palette. What's really important to me is live ease of use. It can have all the parameter modification in the world, but if I can't easily figure poo poo out on a dark stage, it's not very useful to me. Basically as long as the keys feel halfway decent (I don't mind, for example, the keys on Nord Electros or the Roland organs), I'd be happy with it. The vocorder I can't really imagine using that much. Thanks for all the help.

Thanks to a thread on HC, I just ordered one of these brand new for $250 shipped: It's a phone-in deal on Musician's Friend, so it doesn't appear on the website. They also have a ton of other phone deals going right now - Road Worn tele for $600 (reg $1000), AVRI 62 Jazzmaster for $1000 (reg $2000), Les Paul Std Plus for $1800 (reg $2700), Les Paul Axcess for $2000 (reg $3100-3500)... good stuff.

its the end of the month and i'm not supposed to spend any money, but goddamnit, the RZA recorded the beats for the 36 chambers on one of these babies (Ensoniq EPS): i found it at my local thrift store for a hundred bucks. bought it semi blindly, it came with no samples and i had to bust out my old internal floppy drive to write a demo image to see if it worked properly once i got it home. it did, but now i had to find a source of doubly obsolete double sided/double density floppy disks. a chance craigslist deal got me a box full of them on wednesday. it's a simple sampler, figuring more and more out a day a time. my crappy four track recordings will no longer be lacking in the rhythm section. hurray.

A bunch of years ago, our college pep band (played at basekeball/football games) played at Pleasure Island in Disney. They provided the amplifiers, and that was the first time I got to plug into a Mesa. At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, it was an unforgettable moment, hearing a high-quality tube-driven amp being played at band volumes in an outdoor venue. Hold on to that thing.

It's getting closer to being in my hands, so I thought I'd post about it. I was one of the winners of Tommy's FuzzHugger tourbox contest, and my prize was a pedal of my choice. Well, I worked with Tommy to make it more the pedal of my dreams! We started with the Master AB-Synth, and I worked with Tommy to spec out everything about this pedal, from the guts and circuit tweaks and mods to the choice of enclosure, graphic and controls layout. By the end of our design brain storming (which probably went like a lot of "signature pedal" design brain storms, me saying FEATURES I wanted, and him parsing it all and making sense of it in terms of CIRCUIT design - credit where credit is due!), it had become easily the most sophisticated, versatile pedal that Tommy has ever made, so I thought up a name and graphic for it... Name: AΩ-Synth, and the image is the "Eye of God" photo from the Hubble. The graphic is in a shimmer transparent on black burst. It's impossible to capture the shimmer with a stationary camera, of course, but I'll take a video when I get it in! 6 knobs, three footswitches, and one or two other regular (non-foot) switch(es) as well. That hole drilled right in the middle of the "eye" (where in the original photo there is a lone star quite prominently) is the oscillation mode's LED, it'll be a superbright white LED, so when the Eye of God "opens," the pedal goes friggin' nuts. I absolutely can't wait to get this pedal in. I've been playing my Algal Bloom a lot for the last week in anticipation. There's some other fun stuff about the pedal but I don't want to spoil it yet. When I get it in, I'll definitely bump this thread with a demo! I'm also probably going to be reviewing the process of working with Tommy on a custom for FrugalGuitarist; there aren't a lot of makers out there offering in-depth custom work, let alone custom work at affordable prices. There are a lot of things Tommy will do to your pedals on request for just $10, though obviously something really crazy and complex like this would be pricier. I can't tell you how grateful I am for him doing this for me; I'm having to sell a number of well-loved pedals to make some money for the move my wife and I are making in late July, and having this coming in is really going to make that easier to stomach. Tom is an absolutely stand-up guy, as anyone who has bought from him or won one of his drawings/contests knows, and he makes great stuff. I can't wait to get this in my hands and under my feet
