I'm sure we all know it, but the giant political shift that happened in the late 20th century is wild. Complete flip flop of political party regional influence. Maine, for example, was a diehard Republican state, because of the Civil War. Fun fact - look at the electoral maps for FDR's elections. He dominated, and yet, two states never voted for FDR: Vermont and Maine. This is how deeply Republicanism became in this region, a defining thing. Such that today Vermont still has a Republican Governor, even though he doesn't resemble the national Republicans very much. Maine, while overall very liberal, still elects way too many Republicans - see Susan Collins, for example. You still see legacy Democratic representation in place like West Virginia too, as a legacy of the Civil War. If you remember that bigot clerk who wouldn't notarize gay weddings years back, she was technically a "Democrat" but like 100% guaranteed today she's a crazy Trumper. This legacy though certainly colors voting in Maine still. Those nice folks down the road will vote straight Republican, because their father did, and his father. Etc..
