So in what seems like an attempt to suppress conservative voter turnout favoring Adrian Hernandez in the Pearland city council runoff, Dalia Kasseb's team sent this out: Although it might drive some low-information conservatives to the polls, only to find themselves sweating over which button to push...

I thought so before the election but republicans happily voted trump the same turnout as any other year so I’m pretty sure that idea is in the toilet. Even guys I know who would say trump is a joke when the primaries started or even when Cruz was still hanging on were full maga by the time November rolled around.

Hello Mr. or Ms. Person From the Past, how is it going back in mid-2016 when people were saying this and before all the republicans voted for Trump and continued to vote for the trumpiest candidate possible in every election for the following two years. I'm sure Michael Bloomberg or Mark Cuban could capture the hearts of the NYT op-ed board in 2018 or 2020 just like America Elects did but unfortunately that's the total extent of their appeal. Sure Donald Trump has an 80-90% approval rating among Republicans, but those folks will change their tune once they get the chance to hear what Howard Schultz has to say about common sense solutions to bring down the deficit!!!!

The Trumpists are always going to support Trumpy candidates, but if the special elections have shown anything it's that it does cost them support in general elections. I'm not saying a "fiscally conservative, socially moderate" party could ever be a serious electoral force, but if it can even manage 5% of the vote, that's enough to spoil GOP chances in some races, and that's a very noble cause. EDIT: Perhaps "considerable" was overstating things. Non-trivial would perhaps be a better description.

A new fiscally conservative but socially liberal party is going to take votes from the party that those handful of people currently vote for (that would be the democrats) and not the party that has near-zero ideological overlap with it.
