Pookah posted:I've read a lot of his books and not only was he highly rated in his field as a scientist, he was extremely engaging as a writer - I remember the first time I read "The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat", I was was so completely engrossed, I climbed down off the top deck of a double-decker bus and out on to the read while still reading. I can't recommend his biography highly enough. On the Move is the story of a completely singular life lived to the fullest. It's totally inspirational and honestly I'm kinda jealous of some of what he accomplished alongside his groundbreaking research. For example, while in medical school in LA, he would regularly drive to the Grand Canyon. Over the weekend. On a motorcycle. He would pop out of class and immediately hop on his bike and head east. When he got tired, he'd take speed. He'd then camp and hike from Friday night until Sunday night. He'd leave late Sunday, again munching speed, and arrive back to campus for his first class Monday morning. Seriously, every phase of his life has some incredible elements that have inspired me hugely to make more of my free time. An ultimate example of "a life well lived".

I appreciate Sacks openness about his drug use in general. I was reading the book about hallucinations recently and was struck by his candor about drugs.

I was curious when he was in medical school because how easy was it back in the day if you had time to just go on vacation regularly like that, then got even more confused when I read he went to medical school in England. He did his residency at UCLA.

For a fair few people I've met it's more about not using terms that are shared with Big Monogamy than anything else. More than once I have heard the phrase, "you need to get rid of any expectations that monogamy forces on you" or similar lol The term "joyfriend" I've heard a lot, but that's more for ace folks ime. It's cute tho I think.
