Maxed out our room at 40 in Fort Worth yesterday. We're expecting more along the lines of 60ish next month. We have a speaker from PP next month, so we may get even more. The astroturfed Women's March movement is still thrumming like a vibrator around the Metroplex. We're hoping to turn some of them legit.

The 2016 album Phone Power by They Might Be Giants has a lot of songs thematic to these things we're dealing with, but are more satirical of what we're fighting than inspiring for what we want to build up. I also find myself coming back to We Want A Rock a lot.

My county has a DSA chapter of like 10 people, and from the posts its a bunch of weird marxists. Which is fine, but I would like to actually get other people involved and constant messaging that just says " seize the means of production" across the chapter facebook page isn't helpful. At least the progressive dems groups are organized. Do I just start a splinter chapter or what?

# ? Feb 21, 2017 03:20 |

no need for splinter groups, get in touch with them and see if you can supplement their shitposts with contentposts to actually get the audience they might already have organized and angry

I went to an Austin DSA meeting and there were tons of other first timers, and I feel like the meeting had one huge flaw: it didn't give people a clear next step of action. With the numbers of DSA members shooting through the roof, lots of people are going to be just dipping a toe into the water and could easily not show up again or slowly fade away. The meeting hosted people from various groups who talked about joining their groups, or attending various advocacy days at the state legislature. But the DSA itself seemed to be doing nothing but hosting a rally where other groups advertised. I think the DSA needs to end every meeting with a simple plan of action that everyone can join in on. Something like next Saturday we are going to go to this one area and do something for the community while promoting DSA to potential new members. Or really just anything so that no matter who shows up to the DSA meeting, they know exactly what is the next physical thing they will go do. I think this will help retention and keep energy high. Does this make sense? Should I just write that idea up in a clearer, more persuasive way and send it to my local DSA facebook page? I don't want the DSA to lose out on this one-in-a-lifetime glut of new members.

Also the FB page for the group I'm in is dead as gently caress and I feel like a jerk being the only one posting in it.

The meeting hosted people from various groups who talked about joining their groups, or attending various advocacy days at the state legislature. But the DSA itself seemed to be doing nothing but hosting a rally where other groups advertised. I absolutely agree with the sentiment, and I'm relieved (well, sort of) that I'm not alone in seeing this. There is an oversaturation of discourse and a dire need for political action, and this is the second meeting where the tone just drifts around various concerns without giving people a leg to stand on. Having a comprehensive core of left-wing issues is one thing, but expecting people to simply drift into, say, advocating water protection in east Texas, or hoping they call up their representative at some future point in time to oppose SB 134 all on their lonesome, does not really lend to something you would describe as 'strategy'. There are some other problems that are likely more to do with the Austin chapter in particular, but I feel the DSA needs to understand that it isn't simply supposed to be a vendor for spontaneous causes and other organizations. So, yes, bring this up on facebook, at the very least (and on that note, remember that the leadership isn't exactly tech savvy, so you might require a more direct way of bringing this to their attention).

All the real DSA work gets done by the work groups. The general meetings are just there for them to recruit from. At least thats the feeling I get locally.

# ? Feb 21, 2017 05:26 |

That's a lovely strategy that's going to make most new people drift off. Maybe they need to pick a particular local issue or area and have a series of events designed around improving it.

It depends on how big the chapter is, if you have like 200 people it's more practical to split people off into work groups where people with similar goals (primarying dems, recruiting, focusing on racial justice, etc.) can laser in on policy goals or w.e. Every DSA chapter is guided by the national but afaik given a shitload of freedom of how they want to set up and operate.
