Thanks for the heads up on this one. I've been meaning to pick it up for a while.

While we're talking about Ridley Scott sci-fi films, does anyone know if the new release of Blade Runner is a new transfer or if they just used the same thing from the 07 release? I'm assuming it's the same, but I just want to be sure. I have the 07 DVD, but not the blu-ray.

Can't imagine them using a new transfer for it. The 07 transfer was basically perfect.

This is what I figured. I just wanted to make sure they didn't "improve" it with any DNR bullshit or any nonsense like that. I still don't even understand why they even reissued it again.

Duh, they re-issued it so that they could make money off collectors again. According to High Def Digest, the transfer is identical to the '07 version.

I really hope they dig back into their archive. Back during the format war days, I remember reading that they were sitting on a ton of B&W transfers because they didn't think they would sell.

Boom.

Different subject. My wife is nuts for the Bing Crosby/Danny Kaye movie White Christmas. I ordered the BD for her to have for Thanksgiving (she and her mom watch it every year) and Amazon screwed it up. I looked at other retailers (Barnes and Noble carries it, but for $10 more, big surprise there), etc. A couple have it but show different cover art than the "Anniversary Edition". Does anyone know if they issued two different versions?

Nabbed the French Ultimate Edition of Phantom of the Paradise today at Half Price Books (still $25, but that's fair.) Why did we let them beat us to this? Why is this movie not universally acknowledged as one of the all time great rock musicals?

Whoa, I'm surprised they were able to get that away from Anchor Bay. I doubt they can improve the transfer much but I'm really curious to see what type of extras they can pull together.

Fingers crossed that they can get Night/Dawn to round out the series.

I hope they rescanned Day of the Dead. The Anchor Bay BD uses the old HD master used for the Divimax DVD eight years ago; technology has gotten a lot better since then.

As for Night/Dawn, "Night" is public domain so they'd just have to get a good print of it to do a release, and I hope someone puts out a better BD of Dawn. The Anchor Bay release doesn't do the film justice.

It's weird. After it came out Tom Savini apparently said he had heard of the complaints so he decided to watch it and he says "nope blu ray a-ok". Twilight Time has basically said "whelp that is the new master that Sony gave us, tough poo poo".

Weird as all hell. I don't know how anyone thought that looked ok.

Yes...which makes the whole thing that much more pathetic.

VOD and HDTV has a non-hosed up transfer (so that removes the whole "well, the studio gave it to them that way" argument)

From what I've read, they only have access to what the studio gives them and that's what they got. It sucks for people who spent the money on it and the people who are gonna be suckered into spending even more for it on Ebay but what can you do, poo poo happens.

I do hope Scream Factory takes a look at the movie once the deal with Twilight Time ends, I believe it's like 3 years or something though so it'll be a while. Also Fright Night because I want a goddamn Fright Night blu ray.

Well, that's why I pointed out that you can buy a non-hosed up version on VOD (such as Amazon/iTunes/VUDU) and a non-hosed up HD version was played on TV...so Twilight Time's excuse is a bunch of bullshit.

That isn't to say that the last home release was a proper version either (but it was a million times better than the blue filter the current Blu-Ray recieved)

Scream Factory doesn't do any scanning. apparently it's too expensive. :/ so unless there's another master out there, I don't think the PQ will be much better than the Anchor Bay release.

It's worth noting that some guys over at the originaltrilogy.com preservations subforum are color-correcting the Blu-Ray, amongst other tweaks like grain restoration. Sounds like it's got better blacks than the HDTV version too. Not the best case scenario of a new scan but probably the best solution at the moment. You can't get it there, but at least it'll be out in the wild sometime soon.

Those guys are a bit crazy sometimes, but they're fighting the good fight with things like this.

I have every Scream Factory Blu-ray released so far, and they are all top notch. Halloween III and Terror Train look especially good. Based on this, I would assume that Day of the Dead will look better than the current Anchor Bay Blu. I love all the titles they announced, but was really hoping for Hell Night or Without Warning to get an announcement. Hopefully soon.
