Towards the end he just kept making wilder and wilder demands expecting them to write his character out of the show but they just went "Okay sounds good no you're 7 of 9s boyfriend"

That's almost all shows though. It's basic economics. You keep making seasons until one sucks enough to make people stop watching. If you start making a show with a coherent and satisfying beginning, middle and ending in mind and stick to it, that's just leaving money on the table!
