Kind of a long shot, but at work, I have to tether my tablet to my phone, and I'd like to see how much data my various apps are using while tethered. Since my tablet sees my phone as just another wifi network, is there some kind of data monitor app that will split out the usage by SSID?

Oh, explains why the icon in the notifications is different.

Why is PocketCasts destroying my battery today? Only playing downloaded episodes like I do all day every day. Tried killing the process and rebooting my phone. Neither helped. Phone is getting warm from it.

I cleared cache and recharged my phone. Seems to be working okay now.

I notice one or two of the previously downloaded podcasts no long on my device. Maybe they got stuck in a downloading loop?

The betas released yesterday and today mention that what they're trying to fix.

Crossposting from the parenting megathread in Ask/Tell...

Any recommendations on a photo / video sharing service that:

1) is (exclusively?) supported by user-pay (no advertising / surveillance)
2) allows creation of multiple 'sharing groups' ( eg, group one = [bill, suzan, fred], group two = [ bill, suzan ] )
3) keeps media behind some form of login / authentication
4) integrates with android gallery's "share" function
5) (optional) allows comments on items

Some failed attempts:

Shoebox - fails #3 - hosts shared albums in the open at a "secret url". Also won't allow video upload via mobile data (mine is unlimited and I don't have a wifi option)
FamilyAlbum - Fails #1. I can't find any $ options in the app. Also fails #2, since it only allows "share with everyone" or "share with partner"

You could use something like Nova Launcher to change the home screen and app drawer but it won't affect the status bar and quick toggles and main settings menu.

But seriously. What email app best suits my needs of: I get way too many emails, I read none of them and they're all irrelevant except for plucking out tracking numbers/travel info that Assistant missed, and I hate being in front of a desk so the mobile/app version needs to be fully featured.

The solution is to not get that many emails. Unsubscribe from mail you don't need and you'll find that it turns out every email client is usable when you're dealing with ~5 emails a week, all actionable.

For lovely sites, yeah. For things like legitimate online stores, seems to work okay. Otherwise, I mark as spam and move on in Gmail.

Outlook doesn't have bundles and snoozing is working strangely in Android, but it does sort emails into important and not important buckets. The app works well with Outlook.com (of course), and you don't need an account there to use the app.

I use it for work and it is nowhere near Inbox, but I find it better than Gmail app plus special web link to view the full site.

The unsubscribe link has worked for me every time except for with Walgreen's. I get no garbage email at all now, though, so either Walgreen's gave up and just stopped or it actually did work and just took a really long time. The thing is, I still don't trust it either.

Oh this reminds me and this probably should've been posted here before. But, Google is sending warnings that, if you are on the beta for Play Services, you should drop out of it as it could break Gmail and Hangouts now that Google+ is gone.

https://developers.google.com/android/guides/beta-program#leave_the_beta_program_using_the_opt-out_url_recommended

Apparently, Google+ was that deeply integrated.

quote:

[revised]Will Google+ shutdown impact the Google Play Services Public Beta Program?
No other Google products (such as Gmail, Google Photos, Google Drive, YouTube) will be shut down as part of the consumer Google+ shutdown. However, as we begin shutting down Google+, users who have opted in to the Google Play Services Public Beta Program may experience issues using Google apps like Gmail and Hangouts. To avoid any interruption in service, users can leave the Beta Program.

Is there an app or something that lets me access the "internal" volume of my bluetooth headphones?

I have JBL E45BT headphones that have physical volume buttons, the + button is broken and they're stuck on the lowest setting. If I connect them to a decive where the devices volume settings and the headphone settings are synchronized (such as a Windows laptop or an iPhone) I can adjust the volume and everything works. If I connect them to my Moto G3 though, they're silent and changing the phones volume doesn't change anything. I can't reset to factory settings because that requires the + button as well. So yeah, can I access that volume settings from the phone in some way? I found a bunch of apps for "automatic bluetooth volume" but they all just change the phone volume based on what bluetooth device is connected.

Is there an app for the headphones themselves? A lot of Bluetooth headphones have such a thing which allow you to control the headphones through the app on your phone.

Okay well only one of these things is true and I'm going to guess it's the first one because "I read nothing and I hate sitting still at a place of work" indicates favorable odds towards the possibility that you do not have the aptitude to write a coherent or worthwhile email in the first place, so we're not going to be needing any capability to do that. You should just use Gmail, filter all of the mail from your Assistant into a folder of things that are actually important, and then search your unsorted inbox ad-hoc when you feel like there's something else you need and tag those messages into the the Actually Important folder in the event that you actually find them. Remain completely inscrutable under all other circumstances and train your colleagues to avoid the dismay of contacting you by anything but telephone and face-to-face conversation.

Oh yeah. Everyone is well aware they should never count on me to read any emails and also I'm never in my office so just call me if I'm needed. Doesn't stop people from treating the various mail lists as a slack channel and filling my inbox up.

Nothing that's more convenient than just uninstalling from the app drawer, assuming you have a launcher which can do that. If you don't, well, I guess an app for batch uninstalling might be Nova Launcher, the free version.

I saw an article headline the other day that the seemingly-frequent shutting down of Google services is hurting their brand. I can't say I disagree, but to a point. I mean, I use chrome on my phone, I'm only going with Android, I use various Gmail addresses, and I have 2 Google homes.
