I can't remember if it was here or another thread but I remember somebody complaining about calling a locksmith and them drilling and replacing their lock and charging $300 for it instead of actually picking it. It turns out that this is a really common scam based on manipulating Google ads to scoop up people looking for actual, legitimate locksmiths.

god I hate the poo poo that yahoo does when searching for literally any program, my 12 year old brother likes minecraft, happy wheels, roblox other popular youtube games and when searching for "miinecraft download" brings up some bullshit installer as the "first" link (it being something chopped with a gap on the top of the results), and of course him being 12 the first day he got his own laptop he ended up installing a bunch of garbage on it

I don't live there and I can't verify every one of his downloads and it's frustrating and dumb that yahoo allows that garbage

As for why he uses yahoo it was the default search engine and after setting it to google something sets it back to yahoo again :(

I can't figure out how in 2016 microsoft still hasn't figured out a way to prevent tech-illiterate people to ruin their computer with two clicks. I mean, it really is shockingly easy how fast you can turn a brand new device into something completely infested with viruses.

I can't remember where I read it, but it's basically because most OS programmers are, well, programmers. They subconsciously build the system that's easy for them to use, but not for the common person for who the majority of their Internet usage will eb common sites like Google and Facebook. Hell, just look at what happened to RedWriteWeb back in the day- while I'm sure things have gotten better, I shouldn't think it's by much.

The day he got the laptop he accidentally put all that crap on there and I had to go over and wipe the drat thing clean on the 2nd day

I put most of the stuff that wouldn't be on steam for him (he also downloaded a fake steam installer too!) and a couple days later gets some dumb sort of not a virus but annoying as poo poo stuff that comes bundled when you mash yes/I agree on installers

I can only await what poo poo I find when he starts (assuming he's not now) looking at porn

I wouldn't be surprised. It seems like every other update resets which programs open certain file types. I just had to tell my computer not to use Edge to open PDFs despite having had an actual PDF reader installed since before Edge even existed.

Also was very pleased to see Microsoft finally gave me seperate options for "shut down" or "shut down and update"

Sometimes you need to restart your computer real fast, and you don't have time for a 20 minute update! But Windows often doesn't even give you the loving option. I was so happy I even tweeted at Microsoft how happy I was they finally fixed the stupid system.

Then today I get another update, and what do you loving know? I'm right back to my only options being "Shut down and update" or "restart and update" and even on an SSD the update takes over 15 minutes.

Guess that was an un-intended feature :argh:

Only an option if you have windows 10 professional, and I have home version :negative:

You can still disable windows update completely using registry changes, but then you open yourself up to security vulnerabilities.

Psst, that's a workaround for windows 10 home that bypasses the usual windows update interface. It lets you turn it off temporarily as well as permanently and really easily turn it back on again.

Since 7 there has been a trend to just make the interface exist because it has to with the expectation that power users are using search to get deep into the control panel, start menu, or documents without having to deal with the clusterfuck that has become modern GUI hierarchy. 10 then gets an extra bad rap because people instantly recoil from Cortana and mash hide even though the correct answer is to turn off the dumb Cortana features and use it as the new search bar.

You shouldn't have to disable windows update just to avoid installing a patch, though. That's ridiculous. And again, then you have to manually turn it back on and off and on and off every time.

Its really not unreasonable to ask for "shutdown" and "shutdown and update" as options :v: And clearly they can do it, since they just did it. But then they reversed it for god knows why.

Took half a day of scans and bullshit to pull all of it off. Takes it home, calls us literally an hour later "It's still all messed up!!!" Turns out her grandson got on it, tried to get some games, and hosed it up so bad we had to format/reinstall. She was not happy. Thank god for Windows 7 programs & features menu showing install date so we could go "look, this thing was clean, all this horrible garbage was installed TODAY, by your grandson." Click here for free games is the worst, they're apparently utterly irresistible to children and bored old ladies.

A better metaphor would be switching from a desk chair to a hammock. Sure, it has its uses, but sitting at a desk isn't one of them. I have to assume you're young, because of how easily you fail to grasp that up until 8 dropped, Windows had spent the previous 20+ years tweaking a basic template because it worked and was what people liked. Then suddenly out of the blue there's an entire overhaul of literally every single part of the system--in a not too secret move to try to universalize their touch-screen friendly system they designed for their windows phones and surface tablets, NOT PCs--and there was not a single person I ever heard say they liked any of the changes. I don't know, I'd take a dozen Vistas or 10s or half a dozen 8s before I would take 1 ME. They've been having a user experience crisis for about the entire past couple decades but at least the internals aren't at the quality of ME.

The biggest issue I have with 10 is that indexing sometimes doesn't work at all well - sometimes it won't even find shortcuts from within the start menu structure which I don't think should be too much if any ask...
