Menasor is a rage beast because the other four hate Motormaster. Then you have the ones where it works a bit too well like how Bruticus is the ultimate soldier but can't improvise at all.

Computron is extremely smart but has choice paralysis. Piranhacon has a countdown timer to separate because gently caress the ocean, doesn't he? Or is that Predating?

Trypticon is the only other one who is just flat out no known weaknesses. (Metroplex actually has a couple.) You've got a few others who are basically 'single personality trait' like Optimus' compassion or Grimlock being a dick. For the record, I guess, a lot of the movie Transformers didn't get a weakness write-up. I'd forgotten how charmingly goofy some of the others' were, like Rampage being obsessed with MTV.

IDW's take on Abominus was that he was just a big monster guy because they didn't really figure out how to make the gestalt work. I guess if you really want to go into fusion personalities, you could check out Steven Universe.

G1 had too drat many teams of weird monstor robots, it took me long enough to figure out that it wasn't the monsterbots. Huh, and I guess Generations never gave monstructor a proper new release despite his prominence in the comic. I guess they never did have the courage to try pretenders in earnest.

I feel like the cartoon version thing might've been specific to Optimus. He's the face of the franchise, so it makes sense that they'd want an alternate version that's cheaper for people who would like the figure but don't want to shell out the extra cash for the trailer. And since the cartoon version is the one that people are probably more familiar with, it make sense to give that deco to the more casual-friendly figure (also it entices the whales to buy both).

Dreamwave's War Within had the gestalts split amongst the six factions, but the only two you see in the second volume are Devastator and Defensor, and after the Protectobots de-merge, they wonder why they default down to essentially having a violent tantrum. Then Hot Spot gets kidnapped by The Fallen and Dreamwave goes bust so it never went further than that, but a storyline of trying to figure out the "why" of a combiner would have been neat
