Do you feel it, Zach?
My coffee warned me about it.

This looks cool: J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars. It's a narrative-driven adventure game.

"The story centers on Rachel Manners, a 35 year old astrobiologist. She is a member of an elite group of scientists, chosen to embark on one of the most critical missions ever conceived on Earth. Now Rachel is alone, orbiting an unknown planet. Her only companions are J.U.L.I.A., the space probe’s artificial intelligence and Mobot, a huge reconnaissance robot. Together, this unlikely trio will explore the mysteries of this solar system."

Other than an unfortunate name (seriously now J.U.L.I.A.?) this title seems interesting.

Putting aside the angst about the DR timer, is OTR Still worth playing? I played a bit of DR2 but have not completed it due to gamer ADHD.

Also, I may be pulling the trigger on Hack N Slash cause I like coding and it seems to be up my alley.

Yes. As far as I'm concerned it's where the series hit it's peak.

Absolutely, way better then vanilla DR2 by far. Plus with the co-op one can be Frank West and the other can be Chuck.

Caveat: You have to let the ADHD thing go until you progress and level up your character a bit. Rescuing easy to get survivors, avoiding random bosses, and playing through the story until you die 2-3 times is the best method. Also, find all the Gambling skill books, hit the casinos and rack up the $$$ to easily unlock all the cars/bikes to make travel way less tedious(pawn shop unlocks are permanent). In the first mall alone you have everything you need to make a couple of light sabers and knife gloves, some of the best weapons, and there's a hidden area down one end with a sniper rifle, katana, extra zombrex(I think) and a drop box key.

Also, getting all the survivors is achievement completion/combo cards only. To unlock all the endings you just have to beat story mode and make sure to always have some extra zombrex. Once you've unlocked the utility tunnels its crazy easy to get 4+ when the game starts.

I mentioned it last page. It's a complete remake of a game released a couple years back - the original was quite heavily flawed, but the few reviewers that I've seen commenting on the redux edition absolutely love it, and some of them are super-picky about their point and click adventures.

100% positive reviews on Steam itself so far, too.

Humble Store sale deals today:

Stealth Bastard Deluxe - $0.99

I suspect a lot of people already have this through bundles or whatnot, but if you don't then this is an absurdly good price (its lowest ever) for a really fun game. It's an action stealth puzzle platformer: it plays a lot with light/shadow and noise mechanics, and it rewards both careful thought and planning and quick execution -- it's one of the very few games I've enjoyed enough to go back through and try to hit all the speedrun targets. Things I really like about the game:
  • The puzzle design is super-clever. It never reuses old ideas or gives you a puzzle that's just a bigger, more complex version of one you solved earlier (which, tangentially, Full Bore has definitely started doing in the very late game). It's the sort of stuff where you won't figure it out the instant you see it, but once you do find the solution you'll never forget it, which makes replaying sections of the levels fairly painless (which you will have to do a lot, because you will die often).

  • It's incredibly good at teaching the player new concepts. There are 8 "worlds" and each one introduces a new puzzle element, the complexity of which is gradually introduced over the 10 levels within, and the learning curve is balanced perfectly. It's always pushing you to have new ideas.

  • The level design is really, really thoughtful towards speed. On a first playthrough, there are never any sections where you have to just sit and wait for upwards of 5 seconds (like when you're trying to ghost Mark of the Ninja, a game I feel is close in design to Stealth Bastard). If you start trying to speed through, however, you discover that the levels are built for it -- robot patrols and elevators and all that sync up perfectly to enable S-rank runs.

  • The game taunts you, and it is genuinely funny. The game projects messages onto the back wall of the room, and if you fall for a trap (some of which are devious, but all of which could theoretically be noticed and avoided on a first playthrough) it will make snide comments. Somehow this actually doesn't wear out its welcome.

  • The music is pretty great, particularly the success screen, which is the most satisfying end-of-level transition I've heard in a long time. You will get the synth stuck in your head.
Some of the later worlds get very difficult, but there was only one level that I thought was straight-up bullshit, and even that I was able to get through with a little brute force. It's a really fun ride, overall, though, and if you don't have it you should absolutely grab it for a dollar.

I agree with all of this, but I will say that it lacks a certain something that makes the game more of a "I'll just play this for a few minutes" type of game. I can only play so many levels before I want to put it down.

Hey if anyone is interested in JULIA: Among the Stars I'm a couple of hours in. The writing and atmosphere are quite good so far but dear god do the puzzles tend to suck and can be trial and error. So far I ran into a puzzle that I knew the overall solution to, except for this one part that I have no clue how you're supposed to figure out without a guide because the note the game gives you gives no indication of what the other half of the combination is. You also find upgrades for the scouting robot that you need to advance and you need to do this linking pipe puzzle each time and they tend to be unfun chores and confusing, though it might be just me but I hate them regardless. I'm probably just going to treat it like the older adventure games and just play it for the writing and just use a guide for the puzzles, because as I said the writing and atmosphere are keeping me interested in seeing what happens while I find the puzzles to just be obstacles in the way of enjoying them.

Can anyone confirm or deny that GTA: San Andreas on Steam is a giant pile of crap of a port? It didn't even recognize my mouse at first, although I found a fix for that, but the m/k controls are still hella janky and there doesn't seem to be any good way to use a 360 pad (I found one joytokey map, but it claimed you needed to disable the gamepad's driver to work, which, what?).

Is there a known process for making this game playable on PC, or is it in the Saints Row 2 pile? Looking on the Steam forums brings up several contradictory fixes, none of which have yet worked for me.

Yeah, I was expecting a stealth game but it is so much more of an action-puzzle game. It also has a kind of out-of-place unlock system and is very focused on speed-running. I should get back to it, but it didn't really scratch any gaming itch I had. I guess they released some DLC and the sequel coming out in October is a Wii-U exclusive (renamed Stealth, Inc. 2 which is the console naming scheme).

It's an action-puzzle game where the puzzles are largely based around stealth mechanics. Also the DLC is kind of awful -- it's a bunch of levels centered around the world's least intuitive teleportation system. I got it in the last sale, but I couldn't even finish the first level because I kept accidentally running into lasers while attempting to throw the teleport pads.

Sucks that the sequel won't be on PC, though.

There are so many different types of hardware configurations that it doesn't really help to just say 'it doesn't work'.

What graphic card do you have, and are you up to date on your drivers? Are you running windows 7 64?
have you tried Xpadder? Do you have any weird autohotkey thing going on in windows?

I played it just fine with a mouse/keyboard and thought it controlled the same as the previous GTA 3.

Fair point, sorry. It actually runs just fine (although there's no 1920x1080 option), but the controls are kinda crappy. I could probably get used to m/k given time, but a) that didn't even work right out of the box and b) there doesn't seem to be any good way to get it to recognize a gamepad.

Haven't heard of xpadder, though, so I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

Have you tried GInput? It seems to be the most complete way to get controller support: it even has button icons.

I thought the DLC had some of the best levels in the game. Sure the teleporter's a little weird, but its flexibility makes for some awesome puzzles later on.

I'm not really sure if it's actually a port or just an old game.

About the mouse, I had the same problem with Vice City that it sometimes refused to recognize my mouse, not sure if I ever needed the fix for SA, but try to run it in compatibility mode with Aero turned off.

About the gamepad, yeah, I gave up trying to get one to work as well.

SA is nowhere near the lovely thing that the SR2 port is, it doesn't crash for no reason for one thing.

I wouldn't rule out a PC version, but the company that publishes the game has a pretty strong relationship with Nintendo (I believe they also publish Fluidity and other titles). So it may be a timed exclusive for a little while.

But, none of those are games I would play, so...

Eh. Yes.. and no.

The Bad:
First, you get shuffled around if you play with friends in TDM/Titan Mode. If you like to be on the same team, this can be a prob but if you're okay with competing against each other with pubbies then it's not a problem.

Second, it really should still be Early Access. There's a ton of "COMING SOON" features, or poo poo that apparently has been cut but they still left it in there (:psyduck:) with placeholders. There's so many unimplemented features, schematics, guns, etc that it's sort of insulting and who loving knows what they're actually putting in. Matchmaking was seriously broken up until yesterday but I haven't tried it much since then. Also there's no real tutorial and menu system is kinda a mess with so much not implemented and no tooltips.

2.5: Horde Mode (Co-Op) is terrible beyond belief, if you thought you'd enjoy Co-Op aspect then skip it.

Third: This is a indie multiplayer only game so it's going to die and be left with a few dozen of the same incestous vet players that plagues every small MP game. Coupled with the devs blowing their "NEW GAME LAUNCH TITLE WOOOP!" free advertising while having a fairly unfinished game, people are going to shelf it reaaally quick and then it'll be a death spiral.

The Good:
Titan Mode is pretty drat fun. It's sort of MOBA-lite fast-paced run-n-gun 5v5 mode where your team has a giant titan that walks toward the enemy base and they meet in the middle and smash each other and then whoever Titan wins continues moving to smash the enemy base. There are little beatle(creeps) things spawn in the intermediate that drop powerups to make your Titan more powerful. It sort of plays like a more fun Brink where it's heavy focus on bullet spam, run n gunning and slicing people up with katanas and such.

Netcode is pretty good. It's fairly well polished aside from all the missing stuff. Its also $3.5 and you can make much worse choices
