Inheritance is crazy, Lost Arts is an engine making machine (jesus, Ghost Ship with +1 Action), and Borrow is confusing. How do you get the -1 token off your deck... or don't you?

Borrow shows off a minus. There are just -1 Card and -$1; -1 Action and -1 Buy would be no fun. Borrow gives you an extra +$1 this turn, but you’ll draw one less card the next time you draw cards, that’s what that -1 Card thing is about. You get one less card the next time you’d draw any cards, any which way; for Borrow though that’s probably when you draw your next hand. So, four cards that turn instead of five, and well make sure it’s worth it. You don’t want an endless spiral of debt, where you Borrow turn after turn. -$1 meanwhile (not pictured – well neither one is pictured, but you know what I mean) just reduces how many coins you make by $1 the next time you make any. The minus tokens are used on a few cards each, sometimes to give to yourself and sometimes to make other players take them.

Inheritance seems like it could be neat with cards that combo with victory cards.

Oh, ok. I misread that in the original post. I guess any time you draw, then tokens that are on your deck come off of it.

And yeah. Scout becomes much more viable. Even apart from starting estates, each Estate becomes (possibly) at least a Great Hall, where it's a cantripping action card that takes up less space in the deck. Makes it much more appealing to round out a turn with extra buys by purchasing an Estate to get a few extra points on your opponent.

So I played Dominion Seaside yesterday; used the High Seas suggested deck from the manual. Sadly I think duration cards complicate the game to the point where my wife doesn't enjoy playing it anymore. I really liked them, especially Haven letting me save a card for next turn, but she really struggled with keeping track of things that resolved on a different turn than when they were played.

Are any of the other expansion mechanics similarly complicated? Or will I just need to restrict games with her to Base and Intrigue only?

We tap our duration cards (turn sideways) during the cleanup phase of our "abcd" turn order. Any cards that were already sideways were discarded prior to that. Helps quite a bit.

I'd say duration is the heaviest in terms of things to keep track of. A pure Seaside kingdom might be a little fiddly. I'd at least try Prosperity.

E: some more thoughts. While duration seems like the thing that people forget the most, some of the other mechanics in later expansions can be challenging if people have been playing sloppy rather than following the abcd turn order procedurally. For example, if people just immediately throw their poo poo in the discard pile after they play it, etc, then that will become worse and worse in later expansions where more cards have "in Play" riders.

That said, if you follow the abcd turn order procedurally and execute each card top down, literally, everything becomes so easy.

Also, jivjov, for the love of God, don't play Possession with your wife. Just pretend like the card doesn't exist

Seaside can be a pain in the rear end to play with, but fozzy's idea of tapping cards after their first use is a good one. I'll have to keep that in mind.

My favorite expansion is probably cornucopia; hunting party, menagerie and horn of plenty are really interesting cards to build a deck around, hamlet is a card with a ton of play to it, and fairgrounds is my favorite alternate victory card.

Get beginners in the habit of playing correctly from the start and then as you go through the expansions and they get more complex, it'll be much easier to understand them. Also if a card is not fun for you two or your group, feel free to not play it. There are a zillion Dominion cards now, there is no need to play something just because it came up in the randomizer.

Yeah, between people on Dominionstrategy not being able to comprehend how tokens work and some of the idiots I've had to teach the game to (doing everything from not using a play area to discarding facedown and forgetting which was their deck), I absolutely cannot stress how imperative it is that people not cut corners in Dominion. The moment you do, any +Card +Action card becomes an infinite combo.

Playing cards to the Play Area in a clear order will make "learning" Prosperity seem like sarcastic hyperbole. If you don't, then Prosperity will gently caress your poo poo despite effectively adding no new rules to the game.

I thought tapping Durations was standard? DXV uses a different row for Fresh durations and Cooked durations. Tapping them is less prone to accidents, though.

Also, I use the Embargo tokens to track bonus Actions, since they're just the Dominion logo and they're not used for literally any other card.

is Bruges a bad game? It felt like eveybody was always drowning and you were completely at the mercy of the draw. I literally didn't draw a single purple card after the first few draws, meaning I couldn't activate any of my people who needed purple workers, or even build canals to the third spot because I needed a purple card. It felt like 2-3 of your actions were just in response to what other people or the dice did to you, and then you were at the mercy of what you drew. It felt impossible to build up any kind of synergy with the cards because who knew what you were going to get. Also our game took 2 hours so it wasn't even a light filler.

Do you use this to maintain an action stack for any +Action effect or for specific circumstances? I basically just play out the stack verbally when I do it but some people lose it when we're using things like throne room, maybe something like this would help for certain kingdoms.

Only once we start playing +2 or +3 Action cards (Village/Crossroads/etc), cards that give optional actions (like Ironworks), or cards that self-trash (like Worker's Village). It's not necessary for Labs and Markets because it's pretty obvious when you're just chaining non-terminals.

Same thing for using spare Coin tokens (in the play area) on cards that provide +Coin either optionally (like Ironworks) or before exploding (like Worker's Village). Then, if you spend Coin tokens from your mat, you can just throw them into your play area and count them up the same way. It's easiest to just use the tokens to represent any and all +Coins that don't come from Treasure if you have people who are bad at playing card games cleanly and sanely.

With Star Wars: Armada coming out I've been feeling the itch to play some sort of tactical miniatures wargame, but the long period waiting for it to be released allowed me to think soberly about the fact that I really don't have the time, other interested players, or ability to justify continuing to buy expansions necessary to play a game like that.

I have some strategic or abstract level wargames like Memoir '44 and The War of the Ring, but is there some kind of board game that would scratch the "tactical miniatures wargame" itch that's semi-self-contained, one time purchase (and is generally a good game?). I actually did buy Imperial Assault with some windfall money, but it's basically the same "must buy expansions regularly" model to play as a wargame as Armada.

For extra difficulty, if it were fantasy themed (as opposed to historical or sci-fi) it would really help in getting my wife excited to play it.

I do the same thing when I'm teaching people to get them out of the mindset that +1 action means "play a card right now" or +1 coin means "take a copper." Once they've learned we tend to track actions with the tree method (placing cards on top of cards that provide actions and offsetting if it provides multiple actions.)

I've only played Battlelore once (the second edition) and I've never played Memoir 44, but having never played a Commands and Colors system game before I didn't feel as though Battlelore was particularly complicated. You play some cards and roll some dice. The units all have some abilities but they were reasonably simple and easy to keep track of. I do recall some rules issues I couldn't figure out, but I assume that's because I was taught by the other player and therefore I didn't actually look through the rulebook.

Since I've only played it once I don't feel comfortable giving an evaluation, but I'd definitely play it again if offered. I only suggested it because it is the exact same system as Memoir 44, which I assume you are familiar with, given a fantasy skin.

Command and Colors: Ancients is the best game in that whole Memoir '44/Battlelore genre, but obviously historical.

Warhammer: Diskwars might be worth looking at if you don't like the look of Battlelore.

Absolutely not! Got one copy of Star Wars Armada already up and going. So far, I like the rules. Looking to get a game in this weekend if I can sneak one in. X-wing's looking beefy and will be better once more ships are have been released as the escort ability seems to be useless until Wave 1 comes.

Camp Grizzly looks like a good time. Been waiting nearly 1.5 years for this and looks to be every 80-90's horror slashers dream board game. Still waiting on the expansion packs which should hit later this year. Has solo play!
