I found t shirts for Sinar, the X100 and (comedy option) the Pentax Q.

Geeky but pretty neat. Uniqlo just opened up some US stores didn't they?

I'll have to go down there and grab the Sinar one, I got the EOS one last summer and it's one of my favorite shirts, even though I've basically ignored my 5D for two years straight.

If I had the silk-screening and graphic design skills, I'd like to do some understated ones that use the notch codes for Tri-X, Kodachrome, etc.

I've been hiding this shameful secret for too long and I suppose I might as well come out and say it: I use Pinterest for sharing photos I like. Anyone else? I know it's all shoes and what not blah blah blah, but it doesn't have to be.

I think it's a pretty good interface for photo sharing and an easy way to save things you like via the bookmarklet. If you're on there and use it for photos, post your board so I can follow it. If no one else is on there...well I dunno.

Here's my photo board if you're interested.

It's a pretty cool idea, I've never really used Pinterest before but come across it on a few GIS searches and thought it'd be useful for exactly that sort of thing.

Personally I do Cmd+4 and grab the picture, sometimes nearby text if it's useful.

I had my camera out on the walk from the train to work and stopped (on a public sidewalk) to take a picture, the doorman came out and told me I'm not allowed to take pictures of the building. Very tempting to camp across the street on lunch break with my work camera on high speed drive and fill up a couple of memory cards.

I think my greatest moment like that was I was shooting near a historical building and this cleaning lady just gave us the most evil eye and eventually went to go tell her supervisor who apparently didn't give a poo poo and she just kept glaring at us for the whole day impotently.

If you want to see humanity at its worse you just have to look at jobs that have a small degree of power. Not even policemen or anything like that - doormen are a great example. People who work in train stations all seem to hate me as well.

I live in NYC and was walking around midtown at night a few weeks ago. I heard a security guard yell at some tourists: 'HEY, NO PICTURES OF THE BUILDING. STOP TAKING PICTURES OF THE BUILDING'. If I hadn't been on my way somewhere I would have walked right up to him and started taking as many pictures as possible.

It has a great selection of papers but I think it's a touch overpriced. I had my portfolio printed at a great little outfit in south east London called Digilab that basically was just a huge printer in a warehouse space. I think with the print space you're paying a little more for the premium of them having a trendy shoreditch address.

I think mpix is the go to for american printing though.

For quick, one-off prints from 4x6 to 8x10, I use Wal-Mart. For serious prints and anything larger than 8x10, I've been using SmugMug and don't have any complaints yet.

Winter is actually the best season to visit Death Valley. It's exactly the same visually, but instead of 130 degrees it's around 80 or so. There may be a handful more tourists at the more popular locations, but it's no big deal really since the popular sites, in my mind at least, aren't that cool looking. To really appreciate DV you need a four-wheel drive and to get off the main roads onto the jeep trails.

Death Valley is my favorite national park. I try to visit every year, although I did miss last year. :(

Also for National parks up here :canada: they are busy but only the really easily accessible places. Anything that requires more than a 10-15 minute walk and the crowds really drop off. Those popular places are often pretty nice and are worth a visit but only if the crowds are not insane. I try to do it at off peak times (like early in the morning for example) and it is usually more manageable.

Worst case scenario.
Early June is a great time to go to parks if you don't mind gambling on the weather. I went to Dinosaur National Park and Drumheller in Alberta and both were nearly deserted. Apparently it gets crazy as hell in the summer though as I've had friends and relatives tell me that the Royal Tyrell Museum often has a lineup around the building to get in whereas we just walked right in.

The key is that early June is about the latest you'll get before people start going on vacations and school gets out. The bonus being that the roads are a lot emptier too.

One time I went to Mount Rushmore in January (I was in SD on business) and it was just me and two or three other people there. Got lucky with the weather as it was clear and sunny.

Spring/Fall is the best. :colbert:

Assuming the roads are drivable, nature is goddamn beautiful at those times. And as photographers, these periods are recorded much less frequently so you can even get some unique shots of famous landmarks.

I really, really want to do Yosemite in March someday.

Yellowstone in winter is pretty amazing too, but the interesting stuff is hard to get into (lots of areas are snowmobile/guided access only).

I agree, gently caress going anywhere in the summer, its usually too hot and too crowded.

I was really happy with my choice to go to RMNP in mid/late may. It felt like we had the park to ourselves.

The National Parks we visited were very bearable in May and I'd recommend it as a good month to go if you don't have school-aged kids. The only downside is that places with high elevations can still have accessibility issues due to snow. We got about 3 miles into a 3.5 mile hike in Yosemite before getting turned back because we could no longer find the trail, for instance. Places farther north can be really ridiculous. We went to Mt. Rainier in late July last year (which was an admittedly bad year for snow) and it might as well have been March. We ended up going back the last weekend in September and the snow on the lower trails had only just cleared up.

xzzy posted:

This is also really good advice. Once you get more than 0.5 miles from the roadway in most national parks the crowd thins out considerably and it becomes a lot more pleasant. The scenery also often gets a lot better.

Hákarl is traditionally prepared by gutting and beheading a Greenland or basking shark and placing it in a shallow hole dug in gravelly-sand, with the now-cleaned cavity resting on a slight hill. The shark is then covered with sand and gravel, and stones are then placed on top of the sand in order to press the shark. The fluids from the shark are in this way pressed out of the body. The shark ferments in this fashion for 6–12 weeks depending on the season.
