I mean, I'm not gonna tell someone of strong enough Jewish heritage to qualify for Israeli citizenship they don't count. But fair enough that he doesn't practice.

Welfare cuts were needed to avoid mass unemployment during austerity period, says Scottish Tory leader

Welfare cuts were necessary to avoid mass unemployment during the austerity era, Jackson Carlaw, the interim Scottish Conservative leader, has said. On a BBC Radio Scotland phone-in, asked to explain why food bank use had gone up so much while the Conservatives had been in power, Carlaw replied:

quote:

During the course of the recession, when the priority was to try to ensure we kept as many people in work, we froze the level at which earnings were able to rise, some benefits were frozen during that period as well.

We managed to avoid the crisis in poverty and pain that would have come from mass unemployment.

Had an argument with a friend of a friend this weekend whose family recently found out they had extensive Jewish heritage (i.e. enough to qualify for Israeli citizenship, but not practicing or anything), re: Labour and antisemitism claims.

The last loving thing to do, as well as being a sure-fire way to lose an argument and make yourself look like a massive arse, is to counter with "you're not even really Jewish". Don't do that.

edit: to add to the pile of anecdata, their family is "life-long Labour" but are now campaigning/voting for LDs. In a safe Labour seat.

Nick Cohen's niche is that he writes articles where he pretends to be a leftist who is aghast at what the left has become, only this grift has become increasingly split from reality because hes been doing it for so long. I mean he wrote a book called "Whats Left?" in 2007 that just shits all over leftists for not being more supportive of interventions in foreign countries.

So hes never going to come out against the right, thats not what his character does.

This is why I get a little anxious about disasterous performances by UKIP on TV, because it may cause their target audience to swing back to the Tories. The Lib Dem share could fall either way, but Labour can't make up the ground if all the UKIPers get cold feet.

I have no actual facts to back this up, it's just what the gnawing pit of my stomach tells me.

Left after that and won't be going back, there are better people than enemies of my enemies to campaign for

Apologies that I wasn't around then (won't be around later either!), but again, if people in Exeter are up for meeting up for a pint/politics/Labour phone banking, then give me a PM.

I feel like we're heading inexorably towards an exact repeat of 2017 at this point.

Tory support is clearly hard capped in the low 40s but their supporters are scared enough of Corbyn that it won't really fall. Meanwhile Labour are successfully seeing off the Piss Tory threat to split the vote.

On the other hand labour is seemingly doing a very good job of getting the youth vote up and out, if we can do that that's a lot more support for us, and a fine future for the party.

Never mind degrees or GCSEs, your wealth is in knowing what to do with a piece of cardboard or flexible plastic.

I locked myself out. After numerous phone calls to various numbers people in shops and estate agents gave me - internet etc all locked in flat so unable to look myself, finally found local guy who lives no more than 2 miles away. He turned up after an hour and it took him under 1 minute with a piece of flexible card or plastic to get in.
£65.

I was relieved though, the next nearest was 4 hours away and it is cold out there.

Let this be a lesson to me to leave a spare key somewhere (I kept meaning to but hadn't got round to it).
