I’m not so sure that particular driver was 100% at fault. Foolish, maybe. Firstly, that recycling truck was indicating to turn right and had positioned itself to do so, before deciding otherwise. Secondly, it may well be legal, or even expected, that when turning left you “take the lane”, but I’m not up on my use of bicycle lanes in Australia.

One thing I notice in all of these Aussie dashcam ones is there's so many massive 4x4s with bull bars (roo bars?) just tootling around in the city. Though judging by some of the driving on display I guess an exo-skeleton for cars wouldn't go unused. *edit: I just got to the kids on scooters bit. hoooooooooooooooooooooooooly gently caress. This video has also had too many bikers get creamed. Not enjoying this one much Olympic Mathlete fucked around with this message at 20:20 on Jun 5, 2022 |

Ranger Raptors are the worst. I think it's because the owner spent upwards of $80k on something that actually slower than the base model (or just about any car for that matter) - gives them an enormous amount of pent up anger.

yummycheese posted:what kind of radio antenna are bolted on those bull bars? does aus have a vibrant citizens band radio scene going on? Their CB frequencies are equivalent to the cheap handhelds US people buy in blister packs. Instead of the 11m band the US uses for CB, the antenna for those Aussie CBs can be short enough to use handhelds instead of 102" antenna US truckers use. Ya kinda need a radio when you're 4x4'ing with your buddies. A lot of that stuff is really just for looks, just like in the US.

At least some of them are Cell phone antennas since cell coverage gets pretty poor outside our major coastal cities, lots of country towns might have basic cell service by now but the long long roads between them have big gaps, remember that something like 90% of the country is flat empty nothingness so even if you only go bush one day a year you absolutely need a reliable form of wireless communication be it cell phone radio or emergency beacon, people still regularly die on our roads because they broke down 10km away form the nearest source of water and 100km away from the nearest humans.

Those aren't cell antennas - cell antennas are only a few inches long due to the wavelength. Those all look like 2m or 70cm band antennas at the most, while it looks like Australia cell providers use 700MHz or higher which is a wavelength of 43cm, so you'd expect a whip antenna of around 11cm for quarter wave or 27cm for 5/8 wave.

They're CB radio antennas. I think you often see two on the same vehicle because the taller ones work on flat, wide open terrain while the shorter ones are best for hilly areas (some set-ups will even automatically switch to whichever one is best for the area)

Antennas for mobile are out there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fg67wjQ9Lak https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG_lJbNdzK4 I haven't seen one torn apart but I assume they are essentially a cell band antenna on the end of a long fiberglass stick.

I was just about to post about booster antennae. Those things are great, especially in the parts of the US that are flat nothing, so I can only imagine they're a trucker staple in "flat nothing: the island"coldpudding posted:I haven't seen one torn apart but I assume they are essentially a cell band antenna on the end of a long fiberglass stick. Yep. The antenna is just the pod on the end, the rest is mast because height matters A Lot for wringing performance out of the things Among the best couple hundred bucks I've put into my camping gear. Part of that is just the physics of a round object with good traction vs a thing colliding with it. The car rides up on top of it easily because it has forward momentum and the bumper gets grabbed well by the sticky tire rubber (which is moving upward at the back since the tire is also rolling forward), then the car pretty much rolls right over the top, when the CG goes past the tire it nose dives and the bumper digs into the road but the car still has forward momentum so it pole vaults and rolls a few times. This is also why open wheel racing collisions are so spectacular. Front of tire moving down at road speed meets back of other cars tire moving up at road speed, car gets yeeted into the stratosphere.
