I think its just the fact that Google/Asus saved what, half a cent, using a white instead of multicolored LED? (I don't actually have any idea what the cost difference would be!)

Whether you think most people care or know about different notifications being different colors, don't most phones with notification lights have multicolored ones? So obviously someone thinks people appreciate the multicolored notifications. Its just a very conspicuous cut corner. I don't personally care one way or the other, but that's what I think people might be annoyed about.

Most phones or most android phones? You are buying a BUDGET device and you don't understand why a company would want to save money as well?

No more units would fly off the shelves because of the unlisted feature, "3-color LED notification light". It's supposed to NOTIFY you, do you get pissed your microwave manufacturer cut corners by not having it play your favorite song or at least a choice of midi-tunes?

Perspective over pinching half a cent from a penny pincher. America.

DO YOU HEAR THAT? THAT'S THE SOUND OF ME PATTING MYSELF ON THE BACK.

There's no native support in the OS to change the color of LED notifications nor do they ever seem to be consistent from device to device. Then you run into the issue of multiple notification types at once which also aren't handled properly on the OS level.

A single color LED is fine. It's just there to let you know there's SOMETHING waiting for you. It's not like you can reliably ignore a notification based on color alone now since it may be masking other notifications.

The camera is half-assed. Therefore, google should have full assed it and put a really bad rear camera to save even more pennies. Like the same rear and front camera. How good of a resolution do you need to scan bar codes anyway? The best thing about the nexus 7 camera is how it compresses the photo into a disformed resolution into the corner, like it was a second thought.

At least the glowy Moto X notification would be nice.

Lightflow should still allow you to customize frequency and duration of the LED flashes for different notifications, so you could still get some variety out of it.

It does on the paid version at least.

In other news, HP's Slatebook 10 x2 is out for $479. I guess that makes it the first Tegra 4 tablet? I'm betting it's still a piece of poo poo, though, and the next Transformer will probably have a 1600p screen instead of the x2's piddly 1200p.

It's the best of both worlds. A tablet that's too expensive for what's in it (and the questionable vendor support it'll get later), and a "laptop" that's too expensive for what it does.

I meant that it does allow that. Sorry, bad wording. Can't say for sure if it allows that with any and every LED out there, but its an option when setting individual app notifications.

What's the resolution of images that the Nexus 7 FHD 5mp camera produces? Depending on the aspect ratio it can vary wildly. Supposedly if the camera's aspect ratio matches the screen (which is pretty rare, in my experience) it would be 2984 x 1680.

The resolution is 2592x1944.

So, My Nexus 7 2013 doesn't get recognised by Calibre. I've got the nexus set to developer mode, and USB debugging is on, and every other "please look at my device" thing I can think of. It *doesn't* show up as a media device in my computer. Wheras the 2012 does.

Works like awesome on my Nexus 7 2012. (of course, it didn't for the first 4 months)

So, am I doing something dumb? Did I change a setting on the 2012 that I didn't change on 2013? Is this a calibre issue? a windows driver issue?

[edit]
Nevermind, deleting and redownloading the drivers got it all sorted. Calibre can't tell what books I already downloaded off the amazon cloud, which is annoying and will result in duplicates, but making progress.

[edit2]
Well, gently caress. Still not right. Where does Kindle store it's drat books? I still can't see the books I already have local, and adding books via calibre puts them in the "books" folder which Kindle app cannot see.

I've got a whole drat lot of books on this thing that I e-mailed to the cloud then downloaded local to the tablet, but I can't sort out how to see them or add to them in file manager or calibre.

It still shows the "Ships by July 30" even though they haven't charged me or given me a tracking number.

I could, but I'm not too terribly impatient and I want support from Google.

e: I sent them an email earlier today to make sure my order was still valid and got a canned response, but I just now received a personalized one.

Thanks for contacting Google Play Support. I can totally understand your concern with your device shipping. I want you to know I'm happy to help you get this resolved and assist you with anything else you may need.

I've forwarded your case to a shipping specialist to begin investigating the cause of this as soon as possible.

In the meantime, if you come across any other information that you'd like to pass along, please feel free to reply to this email. Your responses will automatically go to the specialist working on your case.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding. Have a great day!

Amazon's support is stellar. Just get it from them. I've had mine since Monday, prime shipping took 1 day instead of 2.

No. I work here. I manage operations for this and integration for this, while making sure that their stuff keeps working in here.
I'm pretty sure that's still the exact same form email they were using for all the Nexus 4 shipping fiascos. I think the general consensus was that these "shipping specialists" don't actually exist, and they just want you to shut up and go away because the customer support people literally can't see any more info about your order than you can.

Yeah. Any micro-USB charger will work.

Amazon has a bunch of tiny cube shaped blackberry wall chargers for $1.99 ea that are ~1.0 amp, and you can buy Samsung U9 cables for about a dollar each. I've been really happy with the Samsung U9 cables, they don't tend to tangle up as much and have a smooth coating that lets you just pull them out of tangles, and the micro usb end has a good taper to it on one side for you to grab with your thumb.

My advice is to buy 3-4 chargers and as many U9 cables as it costs to get up to the $25 mark for free shipping. Micro-USB isn't going anywhere, and you always need another charging cable. Eventually you saturate the number of places you can accidentally leave a cable (pc, laptop, couch, bed, work, car, trunk, backpack etc).

It's best to get a 2.1 amp charger as your primary for high draw devices like a tablet

Google Play's support is great if you're exchanging a device. It is (apparently, never experienced this myself) terrible if your device isn't shipping or you have a problem with your method of payment.

If you can sell off the old one for a good price, go for it.

I have a 32GB 2012 and 2013. My wife sold her 1st generation iPad, gave me the money from it for my 2012 so I could buy the 2013. No regrets whatsoever, definitely an upgrade over the 2012. I just wish the speakers were better, my GS3 puts out louder music and notifications than my N7 2013.

What are you doing with it, and how much is 230$?

It has a nicer screen, and nicer speakers, nicer build quality, and is faster.

None of those things make me read any faster, or make me any better at match-3 games. If all you do is read on it, you probably don't need a nexus at all. If you read and play phone games...how much is a little nicer fit finish and size worth to you? If you watch movies, display photography, try to do considerable web browsing on it, then the extra resolution is worth a fair bit.

I dunno, I'm glad I bought mine, but nothing about it makes me use it any different, except the better speakers making me more likely to watch a movie on the can than play a match 3 on the can.

[edit]
Right now I can't get my Nexus 7 2013 to work right with Calibre, and not finding a lot of information on why. So if reading is a big big deal to you, it might be worth waiting for something definitive on that.

[edit 2]
WELL gently caress. My 2013 is loose on the upper right corner. Can pinch it and it makes a clicky-sloppy sound. Not unlike the screen lift on previous versions.

Picked it up at bestbuy the other week....how much of a pain in the rear end will a return/replacement be, both from the BB point of view, and on the google side? Anybody seen any whining on this yet, or am I the first, or one of the unlucky ones such that a new one will not do this to me?
